650 Funduro

I have a friend that is interested in buying a funduro as his first bike. I know nothing about them so any weak points to look for on the pre purchase inspection? You dont see that many about any more so were/are thry a good bike?
 
i used to have a funduro (was my first beemer, and loved it so much i sold it and bought a new F650 (Dakar)

things to look for - check steering head bearings, as they are either costly or laborious to replace. make sure that the engine is cold when you hear it start up - if you get there and its warm, the seller doesnt want you to hear it from cold! other than that just listen out for unusual pings/donks/rattles.

they are really good bikes, dead easy to work on if you're handy with spanners, easy to ride, economical; if i could afford a second bike as a winter ride i'd have another!

check on F650.co.uk as there are a lot of owners on there, also check the F650.com tech FAQ's as there is a whole heap of info on there
 
One of the biggest issues depending on mileage is the waterpump seal failing.

Check for any coolant drips from the waterpump drain hole. Upper top of the left hand crankcase and any "cocoa" in the oil. Water in the oil walk away, coolant dripping bargain down as it is a quick and easy repair.

PITA to replace as you have to drain all coolannt but apart from that takes only 30 mins and BMW sell a replacement seal and impeller kit for less than 25 quid.

Also a lot of camchain rattles are due to the hydraulic camchain tensioner. Another cheap and quick repair

Best site to check is The Chain Gang site in the US for loads of reapir FAQ's . The UK site is full of worse Tarka bait than you get in this august establishment :D

One of my few regrets in life is selling my Funduro, the best commuter/town bike and bimble on a sunday bike I have ever owned.

yep the water pump is the thing if you have to repair it remember to use the grease between the seals as it will fail again within 15000 miles with the grease 20000 plus:rob and if its the carb model keep an eye on your mpg starts off at around 65 mpg but drops to 45ish "thrashed every ware" as the main jets ware a simple job to swap jets over the chaingang is a superb resorce i have got the bm.w manual and the clymer for the funduro and a few spares kicking about if any one is interested let me know wish i still had mine much better on fuel than the zzr 600 that ive got now
 
I had a 2000 model one (last of the silver ones) and travelled 6-7 countries without a fault. The trip ranged from souring heat to snow topped mountains of the Alps. The bike never missed a beat and returned a good 60mpg so very economical indeed.

Its now with a good home and a friend has the benefits of me looking after it. :thumb2
 
Many thanks for the comments. We saw and bought the bike last night. A real peach with 12,000 kilometers on it. Genuine bike looking at all the paperwork, previous TUV's and the overall condition. The only thing that worried me was apparent temperature of the regulator/rectifier unit under the seat. He seller had two bikes so I was able to do a quick comparison but apparently "They all do that Sir".
 
it is a known problem on the earlier 650's. mainly because of lack of airflow around the unit. Some people have replaced the regulator/rectifier with a gs one and changed it's location for better cooling, look here
