Just completed a service on Geraldines 650 Single Twin Spark

The owners manual says re-fill with 2.3 Ltrs of oil with a filter change.

I put exactly 2.3Ltrs in, ran the bike for about a minute, waited a while, and then checked the level, the oil is no where near the dip-stick.

Tried running the engine a couple of time's and waited a while to check the level but still a good bit off the mark.

Should I just top it up until it reaches the MAX mark on the Dip- Stick:nenau

Well, it was a pretty dumb question. I assumed you were being humourous by raising the 'how much oil' question ?
As you are obviously not joking.......

The quantity given in the manual is approximate and generally doesn't include the capacity of the filter.

Run the engine, let it stand a while & then top up to the max mark on the dipstick.

....really don't think you should be doing your own servicing.

Owners hand book states 2.3ltrs with an oil filter change and online workshop manual also state's 2.3ltrs with a filter change and neither of them state the the quantities are approximate.

Glad that I didn't ask, are the torque value's in both manuals correct or are they approximate

I take it no-one on here has ever done anything for the first time, found it's not quite what they expected and needed advice then?

that's kind of why I joined the forum and can't say I'd be over appreciative of this kind of response either.

Ian, fill with the amount specified in the manual then run the engine until it's at normal operating temperature.
Leave it a minute then top up to the correct level:thumb

Thanks Ian............ sadly, in most walks of life there's always one DIP-STICK:augie and as luck would have it there's one of them on this forum.:blast

The 650's are a right pain in the arse when it comes to checking oil level. The reccomended way to check the oil is run the bike till it gets warm, let it sit for at least a minute then check the oil level. None of the 'is there oil in the sightglass' stuff here as the bike has a dry sump, oil tank is situated above the engine. Also the capacity stated in the manual is the correct ammount, including the filter.

Ravenbyrne i stuck 2.3 litres in at the last service, which included a filter change, that was around 2k ago and no issues.

If i check mine cold it shows as being low, check it once its warmed up and all is right with the world, it's been that way for 26k so far and no issues :thumb2

Oil level check: Ride the bike until the engine is warm. Turn off, leave for a minute, remove dipstick and check level with bike upright (not being cheeky!), rest dipstick on top of threads ie don't screw it in. Level is ok if it is between low and the mark half way between low & high. I tend not to fill to the high mark as any excess is blown into the air filter box. After an oil change I usually put in about 2.8L of oil. Hope this is of use to you.:thumb2
