As a new owner of a Dakar, I need to put together as toolkit to cover the eventualities... I saw this list on the F650.co.uk forum and wondered if any of you had any recommendations/additions to this list:

8x10 spanner
17x19 spanner
adjustable spanner
big screwdriver
Palm ratchet 1/4" drive
150mm extension for 1/4" drive
1/4" screwdriver/hex/torx bits
5mm allen key
3/8" or 1/2" ratchet (plus step down adapter to 1/4")
24mm socket
Hex 10mm bit
T40 and T45 bits
Visegrip / mole grips

Cheers

Jase

PS: I did try searching... but I didn't find anything :(

Looks about right, you forgot the soft headed mallet tho, infinatly usefull :rob

If you want a decent toolkit for not much cash (and you have the cash spare) you may want to try halfords

I picked up a rather nice toolkit for 100 notes, tho it looks like it may be around £150 now, tho for that money it's still worth it (might have been on offer when i bought it), best bet is to pop down to halfords and have a look, its the 150 piece set. Only thing it doesn't have is a hammer, adjustable spanner(that many spanners and sockets that you don't need one) and screwdrivers. ( i picked up a set for a tenner)

it's this set btw

Just checked what it has in the kit, it's a long list :D

8 to 19 mm combination spanners
8, 10, 12, 13, 17, 19 ratchet spanners
4mm to 32mm sockets
5/32 to 1-1/4 sockets
3/8, 1/4 and 1/2 inch drive ratchets
various extension bars
spark plug sockets
e3 to e20 socets (like the anti thef studs on car wheels)
t20 to t60 socket bits
4 to 10mm alan key socket bits
4 to 19mm deep reach sockets
alan key set
t10 to t40 screwdriver bits, adapter and 3/8th drive screwdriver
Cross head/ philips / flat head socket bits

All i had to buy seperate was a set of pliers, side cuts and screwdrivers.

top kit for the price. especially if you plan on doing your own maintenance / farkle installs :thumb

Looks like a good kit rc mad - I bought the ratchet and 24mm socket individually last week thinking that was the best way to start a travel tool kit - that was 30 quid alone!

I think I'll pop down this weekend to take a look - add a set of screwdrivers and leatherman and I should be good to go! :thumb

Hi,

That original list looks like mine! Also needs tyre levers (1x350 and 2x280) and the original BMW spark plug socket should do.

The only problem that I'm finding right now is getting a step down so that I can use the 1/2" drive to loosen the 1/4" bits. Otherwise, I'll have to find something in 1/4" size with more torque but that seems like doubling up.

You guys should look at ordering tools online as it's much cheaper.
I use this place as they seem to be among the cheapest:

Something like JB Weld, or better still a tube of instant metal is a very useful thing for securing any damaged threads (handle bar end weights). Small and easy to carry.

The joy with instant metal, provided you wear some gloves, is that you can mix it in your hands.
