650GS Seat

Picked up my "new" 2005 GS yesterday and rode her 140 miles home. Went great, although must get a screen!

The only problem was with my bum!!!! Going a bit numb after a while - seemed to be because of the pronounced "step" digging in from behind.

Suggestions? I have to go from Taunton to Norfolk soon!!!!!

Don't suppose I've got a lowered seat by accident???????

Anyone know how you can tell?

Looking at the F650 Forum, people recommend a Dakar seat - anyone got one for sale or tried one?

Num bum and too much wind!

Sounds like my seat which I changed for a Dakar one which is a lot taller, thicker padding and less of a step.....!(£40 from a guy on www.f650.co.uk) You can slide your arse back along the Dakar seat for even more 'comfort' aswell.

Mrs P's low seat and my normal one don't look that much different to me but i'll need to have a closer look. I have a spare 'normal' one now anyways.

After looking again I think the 'low' seat has a wee bit more of a 'dish' in it.

I've got a spare 'clear' Dakar screen aswell as I think I prefer the normal low one more now, the Dakar screen pushed the wind into my chest more.

How about tilting your handlebars forward a bit in their clamps, that made a huge difference for me as I was leaning back a bit on the seat. It'll shift your weight forwards a bit and made riding standing a wee bit easier aswell

Have you ever tried an Airhawk seat? I can't praise mine highly enough, and can swap it between bikes.

I have a Dakar and it had the standard seat and like you my arse was very painful due to the step, I have recently bought a replacement which I was going to get re foamed, when it arrived it looked like it had already been recovered and is a lot more comfortable than the stock one, I am only over near eovil if you want to try it on your bike and see if it makes a difference, at least if you decide to get yours re trimmed then you will know what to do. I did a lot of research and came up with the re trimming solution but as it happens I didnt need to, on the f650 site a chap called the wilbur will do a retrimmed one for about £90 I reakon you could get a local upholsterer to do it a lot cheaper, there is a good one at Sparkford which is where I was going to get mine done, forget Wunderlich or Touratech they are way too expensive for what you get. let me know if you want a try.

Thanks guys, that's really helpful. While going over the bike today, I noticed the bars were tilted back a bit - so will try that first. If that doesn't work, I'll probably give you a shout Ian.

I've got a lowered seat and yes, there is more of a pronounced step up to the pillion section of the seat than on a standard seat, so it tends to either push you forward or, if you're longer of leg (I guess - as I'm not!) have you perching half on, half off the centre ridge.

I just bought a re-trimmed normal seat off fleabay and find it much more comfortable, even though I'm slightly vertically challenged.

If you go to the www.f650.co.uk site and do a search on Wilbur, you'll see photos of his re-trims - he takes your seat in exchange for another retrimmed ones, so if you've got a low seat, he'd send you a normal or high to your preference. I've seen a couple of his seats and they are quality and non-slip. In fract, I think he might be on here somewhere as well!

I have been known to frequent this site from time to time.

A few examples of what I have had done, not by me personally, but by an upholsterer called Lee the Seat www.vikingvinyl.co.uk

The idea of the exchange seat has died the death over the last 6 months or so, as cheap spare seats are becoming harder to find.

A local upholsterer would probably be the best & cheapest option.

I had mine done yesterday by Wilbur's man at Viking vinyl. Bloody excellent job, not sure he will get it a lot cheaper anywhere else though! Value for money! I would say it was the best £80 I've ever spent on a bike, I can now ride my GS without crunching the gears because my legs are coiled up so tightly I feel like a frog ready to leap. I've got about 2 inches more between arse and footpeg and now the crater in the seat has virtually gone I can even slide back for more room. Oh by the way have you seen that touratech are having a sale at the moment. They have a high seat reduced from £400 and a bit down to £300 and a bit. They look nice but I couldn't personally justify that much beer and petrol money on a seat!

I've just purchased a Metal Mule for my 650, now there is hardly any buffeting but a slight noise, no more than the stock screen tho.
