6th gear + 5k revs = Coffee Grinder

Before I call up SLM or Vines tomorrow, my 1150 has started with the funny noises.

Its just had its 18k service at SLM, where they also carried out some warranty work to the battery terminals, Oil Sensor Unit and rear drive something or another.

Did a lot of motorway miles over the weekend, and noticed some awful grinding noises coming from the gearbox area when I hit 5k RPM in 6th. It will then jump up to 6500 RPM, where I then momentarily ease of the throttle and it drops down to 4k RPM straight away.

All a bit strange to me, and not at all something I want to do again as it feels and sounds terrible. 1st thru 5th is fine on the way up the gearbox. The good news is that its still just in its warranty period so I should be covered.

Is it just a bad cog or something?

Do you use 6th gear a lot? I got my GS second hand last year with 4K miles on it. As you say 1-5th gear were fine but when i got to 6th gear it was lumpy as hell. It turned out that the guy who had it before used it to commute thro town and never really got that high up in the gear box. So 6th had been hardly used at all, felt like it was still bedding in. Dont panic it gets smoother with thime. These things are cast out of reclaimed 2nd world war tanks and are as rough as f#ck till you gey 15k+ miles on them. Mines on 14K now and is getting better all the time... Mark :0)

I've done a lot of cruising in 6th, so it should be worn in nicely.

As well as the noise and vibrations, there is also a loss of power.

As it is still under guarentee I would get it back to your dealer asap and get them to check it out. you do not need any gear box problems out on the road.

s'thing up with the clutch - it can't jump from 5k to 6.5k without clutch slip.

Sounds like the bearing on the end of the intermediate shaft to me at least take it back to the dealer and get it on record that it's making nasty noises.Sods law it will go bang when it's out of warranty.Andy

Well done Vines and Darren!

Picked my bike up from Vines yesterday with the work completed.

Darren the service manager explained that oil had leaked into and contaminated the clutch so it was all carried out under warranty (about £550 worth).

The bike is now riding as it should be, and the nice new clutch is sweet and tight, just how I like it..

Top marks to Darren for also agreeing to replace the corroded parts on my lower forks (the alloy pieces which look awful after one winter, you know the ones I mean), all under warranty again.

I was considering a 2nd hand Varadero for a little while - partly because of the recent problems, party just for a change. Thanks to Darren, Vines and SLM picking up all this work under warranty without any quibbles, I am glad to stay on track with BMW and continue to look towards a 12GS (well, a 2nd hand one anyway..)

All the way through this, Darren kept me appraised and gave me an honest and fair view. He was also quite personable and I felt "looked after" for the first time within a BMW showroom. No offence intended to the other BMW staff I have dealt with, but he just came over as genuine and honest, thats all.

Did Vines replace the entire fork tubes or just the bottom silver bits? Or are you talking about the fork bridge? SLM were due to do mine a few weeks ago, but say BMW can't get the tubes the same colour! Now have taken photos, but I'm still waiting. And it's just out of warranty...

I havent booked it in yet, but they have agreed to do the alloy fork bridge and the alloy fork ends (hub end). They are very badly corroded.

Now that is interesting as mine has just had the same fix applied at 18k miles. My problem was pulling away, the clutch would just slip as I pulled away from the lights and I was told that it was the master cylinder had been leaking.

Sadly, apparently my bike is too dirty to have the fork brace fixed under warantty.

Mine did that as well as the grinding noise.

I dont keep my bike spotless, but I did wash it down enough to clean the salt and what have you off after the winter rides. I have a small Karcher pressure washer which is quite handy for quick and easy washes.

My current plan is to clean it up well before the 24k mile service and take it to a different BMW garage to see if they'll change over the corroded parts, although the small flaw in that plan is that it will mean I have to thoroughly clean the bike first (which will be no mean feat).

Have they now?

SLM said that they couldn't replace the silver end pieces alone - had to be the entire forks (including bridge). They have taken digital photos (sent off to B*W) and I'm waiting to hear the results...
