Hi, 99 gs 1150 65,000k developed problem changing from 6th to 5th (crashes it's way in no matter how firm or gentle the change and somtimes bounces back to 6th) all other changes are ok and 5th to 6th is good, any ideas? i've searched site to see if it's a common problem but not found anything similar, checked and greased linkage but all ok, ????:nenau

Hi, and welcome. Sorry for your issue. If the other gears are ok when changing down, then probably your 5th gear syncro has gone. hang about and i'm sure someone will be along to confirm or otherwise.:beerjug:

Hi, oops sounds expensive ? if that's the case wonder how difficult it would be to strip and rebuild box ? last one i did was for a yam RD 350 (air cooled) over 25 years ago sure the principle is the same? could be a laugh i suppose? on the other hand it could an absolute disaster Bollocks !!!! :blast

Have you checked the linkage isn't sticky?

If it's not that, I'd say it's a bent selector fork, or a bearing gone allowing a shaft to move laterally and preventing proper dog engagement.

Just suggestions. I have no personal knowledge of this particular gearbox. I do know it can't be syncros though. It don't not got none :D

Mine did that when the spline from the linkage was loose, take off the starter cover its easy to check

Thanks for advice, stripped gear lever and whole of linkage, it seemed ok but i cleaned and regreased it all, i also rotated the lever on the splines so it sits higher as i found it annoyingly low. Tested it and the whole box is a lot better even though i thought it was ok before, the problem from 6th to 5th seemed to have been sorted from cold but creeps back as it gets hot though no where near as bad as before. I presume that easing the linkage has helped and lifting the lever has made for a more positive gear change, no doubt i will need to get it looked at one day but it's improved enough to be able to live with it for now...........Cheers....:clap
