I know this is not strictly GS related but for those in the parish who know more about airheads than me, can you fit a 5 speed box into a 75/5 easily? Sort of straight swap?

Easy conversion,
You will also need the gear lever and clutch mechanism,
Can’t recall off the to of my head if it’s essential to swap the clutch plate/ covers,
I’ll check today

Edit
FYI we have gearboxes in stock if you’d prefer to fit a fully reconditioned unit

Thanks Mikey

What’s a recon box going cost?

As Mikey said, you’ll need a pre 81 gearbox with the longer (25mm ?) input shaft splines.

This will work with your /5 existing clutch / flywheel assembly.

Purely for aesthetics, the 5 speed gearboxes with a smooth case (no strengthening ribs) is a barely discernible modification from the /5 4 speed box from a few feet away. This is especially true if you use a chrome, non kinematic gear shift lever.

Don’t reuse your 4 speed neutral switch in a 5 speed gearbox.

Got to find a donor /5 first, but that is what I’m looking at now.

Well found a bike, well a rolling chassis and some boxes of bits.

Luckily the paint has already been sorted

These will be going to Colin like the ones on my PD did.

Pretty much all there barring a kick starter. Wiring has been butchered so will need new loom, as has the ignition switch.

Plan is it to build it back stock to start with, see how I get on with then decide whether to upgrade it or not.

Good luck with your project.

An old 75/5 was my introduction to big bikes in 1982 after a long gap. Cost £500.
It was a blue bike. That became a black bike a few years later after a rebuild.

Bike had to go when other priorities took over. 20 years till I got another bike.

The little fella is now in his 40s and sold his 3rd S1000RR last year to take break from bikes, while I continue to chug along on my RS12.

That looks a lovely project bike 😎

I have a nice Bosch /5 chrome horn should you have need of one.

Wise people, on first inspection the biggest hurdle is the wiring on the /5. I am looking to make the bike as nice to ride as I possibly can, it has come with a Boyer ignition but reading about electronic ignition it says it’s not for kick start models? This bike hasn’t got a kicker with it but looking at the pictures it has the shaft for it, anyone got any thoughts on this?

A new loom is not expensive and pretty simple,
It would be at the top of my shopping list.
I personally think Boyer ign systems are a bit shit,
A tri spark is an improvement.
Wedgetail is by far the best of them.
Regarding the kickstart, the reality is you’ll probably never try to kick start it.
Why would you need to?

There is something about kick starting a bike, takes me back 50years, got one on the PD but never use it because I can never manage to start it!
I wasn’t intending to use the Boyer, either a WT or enduralast.
