Hi all,

Im in the market for either a 950 or 990 Adv, but dont know which one to go for.
Ive got up to about £7k to spend and want to get the best for my money. I realise that with a bit more cash i could get a new one for 7800, but is that the right way to go ? The reason i would go for a 990 over a 950 is height, i only jus fit on a 990 and thats on tippy toes. Should i just bite the bullet and get a new one or should i go for a second hand one ?

and if anyone is seling their 990 Adv thenget in touch.

Cheers,

Paul

I test rode (ridded? riddened?) both the 950 and 990 before going for the 950. The carb-fed 950 was much smoother on the throttle than the injected 990, especially at town/twisty B-road speeds. Tank range-wise, my 950 did about 180 to a tank, less with akro cans on. The 990 has ABS I think, which the 950 doesn't.

There are various 'fixes' for the 990 snatchy throttle (which of course I never needed) - grab a cup of tea and settle down for a long read on either:
orange crush in advrider
or
the adventure section of the UK's KTM forum.

For £7k, you should have loads of 2nd hand choice, 990 or 950. That should buy a VERY nice example of the last of the 950 bikes, which would be my choice if I was looking again.

The build quality of the KTM I found to be excellent (better than BMW's). KTM service records are important, especially the first one. If you go for a 2nd hand bike, you can contact any dealer and they will tell you the history of the bike, including recalls.

Hope that helps! :beerjug:

The 950 is MUCH smoother than the 990,but both are good.

The 950 is also taller.

Infact the standard 950 is about the same height as the 990 S and the 950 S is taller yet.

If I was choosing again I would get a late model 950 S which has the tallest suspension. But if under 6' go for the standard bike.

I loved mine when I had one a few years back.Should have kept it.

I'll certainly be very interested when the new Adventure 1190 appears next year.

Slightly off topic but, are the expensive to crash or drop off road. There seems to be an awfull lot of plastic to get bust, I like em but have always wondered about this.

Crash bars cost about 100 quid and protect the tanks which are quite pricey at about 600 quid per side .

The rest of the plastics are quite reasonable and they are obviously better built than BMW so hold up better :augie

MPG probably. The 950 is supposedly horrific on gas.

I got 170km out of a full tank on my '03 KTM950 last night.

Although I did have a levelling mishap in the garage. I filled both tanks, then went inside to pay leaving the caps open, came back to petrol spilling rapidly from the top of the lower tank and the overflow pipe going full steam. In my defense it was only the second time I've filled it.

Then I spent my time jumping off wee bridges and hammering around back roads. God it's a fantastic bike.

I will let you know how the next tank does commuting.
