950 Adv Oil Change

Whilst going through the rather protracted experience of changing the oil, it occurred to me that it might be possible to get the oil out of the tank with some sort of pump or maybe even a syphon. This would save having to take the bike half to bits to get to the tank drain plug.

I realise that one wouldn't be able to clean the tank screen using this method but changing the filter and the RHS engine screen would obviously still be possible.

Has anyone heard of or tried this? Or maybe it's a terrible idea in the first place....

I read in your other post that your tank plug was chewed up ....... There is a small mod item (Can't remember who sells them though, might be Zen Overland) that's a tap that winds in instead of the drain plug thus making further oil changes much easier .........

Let me know how you get on, I might do this mod myself!

What about this? 59 quid seems a lot for a couple of unions and a bit of flexihose! £6.65 for one of these might be worth a punt at the next change though.

It'd work to remove the majority of the oil but I suspect that any contimained / sludgy oil (if any) would collect right at the bottom of the tank where the drain plug is. I'd feel more comfortable draining the oil out of the bottom of the tank .....

Yes - I see what you mean re the sludge (if there is any)

Taking the plug out and fitting a tap seems like a good way forward, although it occurred to me last night that one would be losing the magnet from the original plug, thus letting any small metal fragments into the lube system (I understand that these would be ultimately collected by the sump plug). Do you see a problem here?

I guess both approaches have shortcomings, the pump means that one might miss any sludge etc and the tap means that you'll loose the safety net on the plug magnet.

I'd be interested to see how you get on with your mod though.

Ah but here's the beauty, I believe the crank case drain plug in the bottom of the engine is magnetic which I guess of all places is most likely to catch any metallic material. I don't recall my tank drain plug ever having any debris stuck to it ......

I have a bit of a plan, I'll be doing an oil change soon so I'll do a little report about it!

you can get vacuum pumps quite cheaply that suck oil out of car sumps via the dipstick tube. i have one and it works well, as long as the oil is hot.
