98 R1

great bikes, had a 99 model, went all over europe on it early 2000.s ,, obviously fast but very smooth power delivery so it wont do anything you dont ask it to do,, when you get it and do the service do yourself a favour and clean the carbs out and pop in some new pilot jets , will save a lot of agro trying to get it back to its best

another thing that sometimes happened and felt like the gearbox had gone bad was the gearchange return spring would snap, easy and cheap job to replace , sits behind a cover just behind and above the gearbox sprocket,

I’ve had two R1 4XV’s and they are still a very capable bike despite their age. Don’t be afraid of them. I still have an Ohlins/Harris steering damper for one if you need one (highly desirable).
Hi
Do you still have the sterring damper ?
Thanks Dave

It’s an Ohlins steering damper with a Harris mounting kit, it’s in my garage stores, I’ll dig it out once the rain stops and post up a picture for you.

Just re-read this thread and I have some advice:

Carb floats/valves will probably not shut off at the correct level any more, plus the float bowls and jets most likely need a clean out. If you can afford it, I would send the carbs off to a specialist for an ultrasonic clean, rebuild and set up.

On my last R1 I made a plywood jig to hold the bank of carbs at the proper incline then replaced the float valves and adjusted them to shut off the incoming fuel from a header tank at the correct bowl height, using a small clear-tubing manometer to find the true bowl fuel level versus the makers mark on the carb bowl.

Before doing this, it would tend to flood the LH cylinder on the side stand if the engine stopped with LH valves open as the float valves weren’t seat-tight, running the risk of a hydraulic lock/bent Con rods and also making it a pig to start.

I still have a few R1 bits in my loft somewhere including an ECU, Exup actuator and ignition coils.

Ah brilliant PM me price if you fancy selling the damper etc
Great advice about the carbs, I did have a nosey in the tank and will need a clean out so will be a full fuel system strip and ultrasonic clean (My bath has saved me so much hassle over the years) and thanks for the heads up on setting the floats I've just got a workshop manual so 👍🏻

Same as mine, wish I still had it.
