Read the threads, got worried a bit by all the problems that could ensue.
Took bash plate of ok, rubbers didnt strip, unscrewed old oil filter, no stripped threads or disintegrating filter problems, offered up the new genuine BMW oil filter and it refused to engage the threads, checked the filter, same size and ref number as the one I took off, then I spotted the sealing rubber from the old oil filter was still stuck in place to the engine! I thought the filter had been tough to unscrew - I'd triple checked I was turning it the right way too.
Removed it, cleaned the mating surface and finished the oil change.
