At the weekend and following on from a period of very hard work my other half and i decided that we deserved a few days away and since she was hankering to re-ride the Col du Bonnette again but this time on her own bike we made plans to head off in that general direction on tuesday.
Tuesday morning arrived but despite the best of intentions it was 11am when we pulled away and the sky was looking very gloomy.
We headed for the brightest area of sky which was the coast and over the next couple of hours rode the cotè de azure passing through St. Maxime, St. Raphael and on towards Cannes, that was when the rain started, lightly at first then heavier and finally when it stopped Madame was cold and wanted to call it a day. This was when i used my secret weapon "a heated waistcoat" bought from this very site, best money i have ever spent. Within ten minutes we were to continue :D
So two happy bunnies riding a great road can it get better ? well yes if you consider calling off at Nice for a spot of lunch followed by the only photo call of the day when we quickly detoured into Monaco (at madame's request).

With the weather now dry but overcast we headed up to Menton which became our plan B. We liked the look of Menton and after this trip (two days) would recommend it as a stopover if you are in the area.
Safely settled into the Hotel de Musé (Not a classy joint) but @ 45 euro per night you can justify eating well on the savings which we did.

After studying the map i decided on a route for the next day which subject to the weather behaving would take us over The Col de Castillon to Sospel for coffee a pretty but not too well cared for village and on to the top of the Col de Turini which i discovered is part of the "route des grande alpes".
To be continued.

Stayed in Menton last year, a very pleasant place for those who can't stretch to Monaco prices.

If you want to go to Monaco get the bus from Menton to save driving around for hours looking for a parking spot, plus you can enjoy a beer and not boil in your bike clobber.

Col Du Turini is a very pretty run, not the best pass for riding, but La Bonnette is fantastic - as is the run between the two.
If you spot the Cafe / Bakery half way between the two with a really old Citreon food wagon outside pull in for a coffee / lunch, great value and the owner is happy to offer route advice (rides himself) I think it is somewhere between Col St Martin and Col de la Couilliole, it is in a small town by a roundabout and you can't miss it.

Ok back now had to turn off due to a thunderstorm which tend to fry the router and can take a week to get replaced.
Robin that is indeed Sospel on both pictures and as i said in the script it aint the prettiest village we have seen.
The ride up to the Col de Turini was good but this is not the best time of year, the torrential rain the day before only dried in the sun and it was common to go from a dry entry and find a wet exit waiting for you, add to this the local marie carrying out those hideous tar and gravel repairs over huge sections which were fresh and unforgiving, if that wasn't enough the chestnut trees were shedding their fruits which left huge areas of squashed casings and chestnuts spread out for the unwary. That said it was our first time so it is always exiting to ride new stuff.
We arrived at the top in time for lunch which was taken outside in the sunshine and though simple fare a goats cheese salad and an omelet the location made it seem more special.
Then stopping only to take a picture of someones log pile which we envied it was on to the Col de L'orme via the tiny village of Piera-Cava once over that it was on to another petit col the Col de Braus back through Sospel over the Col de Castillon for the second time and back down to Menton for 4pm and a well earned coffee.
It was a very pleasant ride for the two of us with a late start early finish with coffee and lunch stops nothing rushed which might be too sedate for some but the lady loved it and was raring for more which gentlemen is what we like.
Tomorrow we head into Italy but only as far as Ventimiglia and it's famous Market then back down the coast to Grimaud and home with a good forecast the ride home could be the best bit. What about the Col de Bonnette well we are going to give that a go over a two day run starting 29/30 Oct. watch this space. :beerjug:

Hope the weather holds for you :thumb2

On the approach from the South there is a small village just before the climb up La Bonnette and a Cafe just off the main road on the left, handy for a hot drink / lunch before heading up, inside is a collection of old "Wireless" sets, nothing to do with your broadband, but oldie worldie jobs.

Hardly a tourist attraction, but worth a quick look if your passing and in need of refreshment - especially as there is nothing at the top of La Bonnette (apart from amazing views)

We are due to do the col de Bonnette run tomorrow leaving at 8am but the temp here on the coast has plummeted to 14 deg. and madam is beginning to panic ! Last time we did it in June 2011 and she was pillion, it's a lot cooler behind the small 650 gs screen. ( temp at the summit :eek )
Rasher i thank you for the tips but suspect if we do go for it it will be a mad dash with minimum stops.

Hiya, pretty sure it's now closed up there.

Been snowing and down to minus 10 this week.

I'd stay on the coast, if I were you, cold enough down here!

Just to be pedantic:

Côte d'Azur

Hope it warms up for the remainder of your run :beerjug:

Thank you for that, we might just take a look as the forecast is good for the next 36 hours, i will change the route and go via Castellane where we should get a feel for the weather higher up.
