A ride to the Red Sea (and back)

Hiya Simon,

I'd forgotten that one, too bad.

Your write-up is BRILLIANT thanks so much, I am so envious. It will spur me to go to Jordan and Syria, a long held dream. This autumn.

Off out for Friday ride, starts at 0630hrs, back by 1100, pip-pip!

Brilliant. I love your style. Just the information that I need to help the planning of my proposed trip from Bandar Abbas in SE Iran ( I will take the ferry from Sharjah in the UAE) through Turkey, the Balkans, Italy, Austria, Germany, Denmark and finally the ferry to Harwich.

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

My enduring memory of the trip is the intense heat throughout the period, starting in Germany and all the way back.

By contrast, I made an overnight trip to France 2 weeks ago. It was wet!

The original plan was to go to the Isle of Wight. That was going to cost £38 return - and we could go to france for £26 return on the Eurotunnel.

Not a difficult choice.

Visited a little history.

We visited the Canadian War Memorial at Vimy. (Seen here behind another piece of history, my Electraglide!)

The original craters and battlefield is unchanged but now grassy. The craters are huge! (This is son at the bottom of one).

Here is a French war cemetery near Albert, immense and poignantly beautiful. Note the paired crosses.

We also came upon a tribute to the Moroccan soldiers, near the Canadian memorial.

Couldn't find a camp-site late that evening but instead found an excellent lodging at Bully les Mines, Johnnies Hotel. Slap up dinner for 12 Euro each, with champagne to start (enjoyed by my 13 yr old son!) and a bottle of red for me(and Coke for the son) all included.

Landlord insisted the bike was parked in the courtyard as he said Bully was full of scallywags!

Stopped in St Omer for coffee next morning. Obligingly, it stopped raining.

And there was a Moto Guzzi to admire:

Then back on the shuttle - only bike on that train, surprisingly).

And Yes, Harleys do go out in the rain!!
