Hi all, i have a mate who has recently bought said bike. He went out in the rain , and when he fuelled it up he didn't close the tank lid properly :blast. He realised his mistake when he got home and decided to take out the fuel tank sender unit to check for water in the tank. When he reassembled it the low fuel light stayed on and the gauge showed empty :nenau any ideas ?.
All info gratefully accepted.

It looks like ait has a traditional float on an arm to modulate the signal. Float caught up on something or incorrectly installed?

Knowing my mate i would think he refitted it correctly.

You sure? He made the first mistake of leaving the lid open, then compounding that mistake by taking the tank apart, and now it's back together and broken, he could of quite easily poured some dry fuel in the tank and left it!

Sorry to sound like a twat Stever1 but I have to agree with my namesake. It does sound a lot like a classic " if it ain't broke , don't try to fix it" scenario.
Hope he gets it sorted though - Ian

Hi Steve if you mate lives local I can read any error code with a GS911 if he wants it might help him find the fault

Well guys, he has been working on his own bikes for many, many years. Knowing him, i feel he will have been very careful in his work and not damaged anything. Incidentally the light is on and the gauge shows empty even when the tank is full.
I was wondering if its a Canbus related problem as he had disconnected the sender unit when he removed it, but i don't know enough about the system to have a reasoned opinion.
stevek, thanks for the offer but he lives up in Dunnoon. BTW, thanks again for the info. Very interesting.

Just a thought, Has your mate ridden the bike since messing around with the tank? I know that the F800GS fuel gauge will not show full after refueling until it has covered a few yards. Perhaps the 800R needs to be ridden so that the gauge can learn how much fuel is in the tank.

sounds more like the sender is not even connected, check the pins in the plug!

I love the thread title. A sorry tale implies that the bike is faulty not the numpty who fecked about with it and then messed it up :blast

Take the sender out, check it, reinstall, check all the connections are erm connecting and then ride it for a bit. The modern systems seem to take a while to sort themselves out.
