Monday being a day off for us at Motorrad Central East in Dalkeith Steve the senior technician and I decided to have a run out on a couple of supermotos. My Honda FMX650 and the demonstrator BMW X-Moto.
We headed down the A68, across to Duns then on to North Berwick via as many twisty roads as we could find.
It was real fun day of “back to basics” motorcycling, the weather stayed dry, the traffic was light and I’m still smiling now. I doubt if we went faster than 80 mph the whole day, which I guess, is the whole point of this type of bike
How did the two bikes compare? Chalk and cheese really. While they both handle and stop very well the Honda gives away 15bhp and is 16kg heavier than the X-Moto. Powering out of bends, overtaking or climbing hills the X-moto just disappears ahead. Both seats are firm to say the least but the suspension on the BMW has a little more give. That combined with a smoother engine and greater tank range make it the more practical of the two.
Stumpy
