There's a new whisky distillery started production in Fife. The Daftmill Distillery is the brainchild and labour of love of Francis Cuthbert and his family who farm on Daftmill, near Cupar. The distillery is a convertion of old farm buildings. Production started in 2005 and the first single malt run should be ready for drinking in 5 years time. The distillery can only produce 30,000 litres of malt whisky per year which is a third of what Edradour (the previous smallest Scottish distillery) turn out.

The distillery is only about 12 miles from my house but I took a run along the East Neuk of Fife coast before meeting members of the SS for a bar lunch and then on to the distillery tour.

Less than two miles from my house is Lower Largo, the birthplace of Alexander Selkirk.

He was the real life castaway on which the Robinson Crusoe is based on. The Crusoe Hotel is a popular spot.

There's a wee monument to Alexander Selkirk on the spot where the cottage that he was born in was situated.

It really was a brilliant day for out on the bike so I had a slow bimble along to Crail, a really nice fishing village near St Andrews. Stopping for a photo at this spot is a must

Crail harbour itself is a busy wee place and you can buy lobster and dressed crab from a wee wooden hut. Highly recommended.

I then headed over to Abernethy for a bar lunch with 8 other SS members.

We then set sail for the distillery tour. Daftmill is a picturesque working farm as well as a distillery.

The owner gave us free access to every part of his operatioon. I've been on several distillery tours and this was by far the most informative and personal. The guy is obviously living his dream in this venture and his enthusiasm is clear to see.

Wully thinking about all that lovely whisky...

Apart for the stills which were made on Speyside, all the other equipment and building materials were manufactured and carried out locally within a few mile radius of Daftmaill.

Oor Wully again. This time he thinks he's died and gone to heaven. The bonded warehouse.

A really good day out and a magic combination of cracking weather, motorbikes and whisky. It doesn't get much better, surely?

The single malt whisky produced here will be very exclusive due to the limited production. I think I'll start saving now because I definitely want some :)
