So.... just taken the 1200GS in for its first service.... 10 days, 600 mi9les and no problems.....

and was told that theres a recall/fix-it thingy coming out for the ABS, and that I'll get a letter in the next few weeks..... I told them it didnt concern me as I was sensible enough not to have ordered ABS.

Sorry I cant be more specific on what they will do etc, but as I said, I havent got ABS, as I had read the problems, and thought it overly complicated for a system I dont believe I need, and wasnt going to pay £750 for an item I doint believe I need ( touches wood at this point)...... but as I havent crashed my last 5 or so bikes (all non-ABS)... then hopefully I wont crash this one...

If you dont get a recall notice, ask your dealers folks..
and keep em shiney side up

Crappy Hismas all

Its not a recall.! Its a service campaign which is different.BMW are offering a chance for owners to go to their dealers & get the system checked if they so wish.
Its also a great opportunity to get the bike checked out for any outstanding recalls on their bikes which may have been missed due to bikes changing ownership etc.
It can be carried out at any dealership so if you bought your bike in scotland for eg and live in london then you can have it checked out there.

There is an article in MCN about this. Time limit is February.

Just had mine done at Rainbow, plus a recall on the fuel pump and had the latest fuel map downloaded.

The exhaust now seems to sound 'crisper' and the low down torque seems better....or is my imagination running wild?

My dealer (Bath Road M/C or Bristol Motorrad as they now are called) hasnt contacted me about this or any other recalls. How are others doing in this respect? have you been contacted by your dealer?

I bought my bike from Rydale Cardiff in March 05 and I have never received any recall information from them! I actually chased them to have the latest battery charging recall done!

The dealers won't be contacting owners because the material was sent out by the manufacturer and is a time-limited 'free inspection if you want it' offer... It is up to us to contact them...

I experienced exactly the same effect after latest software update, the only downside is the fuel consumption went up little but I can live with that since it is much better handling in low speeds in the city.

It is interesting how different countries handle this free inspection (as some of you know this is due to the investigation started in Germany after some ABS failures during some motorcycle courses). Here in Sweden, we got an invitation from our dealer for the free inspection and a piece of paper to put inside our manual. The piece of paper says dont overuse ABS in competitive conditions like circuit trainings etc.

I think it must depend upon your dealer. I received a letter from Pidcocks yesterday asking my to contact them to arrange a convenient time to go in.

Yep, same here, Pidcock's again but when I phoned to see what it was for the service guy said he thought it was battery charging/going flat. I wasn't too bothered as I've had no probs with battery and it's not getting much use at the moment.

You're right JayGee, I jumped the gun there. Just got off the phone and it's for the 'battery drain' software re-write.

Likewise I've had no probs. (garaged and Optimated) but have elected to have it done as quite a few people on this site have said that their bikes have run better after this update (presumably there is a fuel map update as part of the re-write :nenau ).

Thing is, as far as I'm concerned, my bike fuels perfectly so I hope it won't be a retrograde step (something that happened with software upgrades on my old 650!) - apparently, once new software is installed they have no back-ups of the previous program so you can't go 'back' a version if you don't like it.

The wonders of modern technology

Yep, that's a little technique we software guys have used to make sure we keep our jobs and cover our tracks!
I'm sure someone posted on here that the battery mod resulted in worse fuelling but I can't find that post. I think it was some time ago so maybe they have further updated it. Dealing with BMW is a bit like dealing with Microsoft :D ;)
Have a good Christmas everyone

Had the update done on the RT. I thought the fuelling was spot on before but now its better still! :) I wouldn't worry about it (though I agree it is probably a little bit thirstier but not enough to lose sleep over ;) )

Silly me, sorry  I forgot, my local dealer is Coopers... Noticed yesterday evening that the sales side has all gone on holiday until Jan 6th... Since service side is now "integrated" into the car dealer to "improve" the service I guess I should not be holding my breath...

Technology gone mad!

Had my abs checked on the 12 last Thursday. I got a print out which told me (and anyone else with the correct software) how many hours, minutes and seconds I had used both the front brakes and the back brake (2 separate timings).

I wonder what else they could download if they wished.

Slightly worrying!

I just visited the local BMW agent in Jersey where I bought my bike in July 2005 - and they say that there are no outstanding manufacturer campaigns, recalls, fuel maps, software upgrades or anything for my bike (based on the chassis number) according to their computer system which is linked into the BMW UK dealer database.

Which is a bit odd...
