Changed front brake pads on my 04 1200GS and when I started it up the ABS lights are flashing has anyone else come across this, I think it may be down to brake fluid level as I opened the bleed nipples when pressing the pistons back but as the fuel tank is full I will have to wait to check the levels.

The brake fluid resevoirs only fill up the ABS servo, not lead to the brake circuits at the wheels.

You may have reduced the fluid levels at the servo hence the warning. What I would do is get to your nearest specialist and get the system bled properly and the fault checked.

Not that you will have the same problem, but if the system cocks up and you need a new servo, they are frightiningly expensive. I know from experience.

you will have to take tank off to get at servo unit.
on top of the servo unit you will see two black caps [allen head] with breather pipes atatched open and fill if that dose not cure problem you will have to read up on doing a brake flush
cant rember the sequance to all the pipes but it is somewhere around this forum.

I change the fluid every year its just that the fuel tank is full at the moment so its a bit heavy I will have to wait untill its empty before I check the level in the servo I was just wondering if anyone knew if a low level in the servo brings on the flashing lights ABS still working fine.

It might help if you said which lights flashed and in what order. While looking for a problem (which turned into a new servo courtesy of BMW) I simulated low fluid level by disconnecting the level switch on one of the reservoirs. The RTOD and Brake Failure lights flash alternately at 1Hz IIRC under this condition.

There is a warning about this happening on motorcycle info I think. Something to do with disturbing the fluid levels. From what I remember it needs the BMW diagnostic tool for the ABS to reset it.

See here:

MotorcycleInfo

I quote:

Front and Rear, fitting new brake pads - do not push the pistons back into the caliper further than is necessary to install the new pads as this may result in an ABS error. Clean the calipers and around the pistons first (plastic bristled brush e.g. old toothbrush and brake cleaner). Push the pistons back SLOWLY or damage to the ABS pump may result.

The ABS error is the one that can only be fixed with the BMW widget (or a GS911 perhaps). Good luck but I think you is needing a BMW mechanic. :tears

great

Thats the one; thanks do you know if the level is rectified do the lights extinguish or do they need to be reset.
