Me and the wife are planning a trip from the North west , heading down to Italy hopefully taking in the Ifels and the black forest and Austria in July, this will be the first time that we have toured on the GS together, so we are sticking to some basic ground rules
1. No hard riding
2. B&B/hotel all the way
3. Make sure that we enjoy the scenic routes, motorways to the minimum
4. Have a fixed destination along the way for a bit of R&R
So as this will be the first and probably last for 16 years (she wants kid imminently) I hope that I can get this one right
Looking at staying in
southern Belgium /Eifels
black forest
Austria – taking in the Berchtesgarten 2 nights
Garda
Maybe Pisa if time allows and then return
If anyone has any personal experience of accoms in the areas I’m looking to go to I’d really appreciate it :thumb2

My other half and I are doing something very similar in June for a couple of weeks. Our destination is Sienna where we are boked in for a couple of days. This is the only hotel I've booked though. My plan is South East from calais to Epinal, east through Colmar into the black forest, then south into the Alps incorporating Grimsel, Furka, Stelvio etc etc. before dropping south into Tuscany.

Home will be along the med coast and north again up the Route des grandes Alps to Annecy.

I have toured for many years now, and for me, not knowing where I'm staying each night is the adventure. Not everybody's cup of tea I know, and your wife (or you!) may well say that you want to know where you are staying each night.

For me, it gives me the flexibility to explore, spend an extra day or so in an area and then hit the auto route to make up time, or to see a road and take it on a whimsey.

Over the years I have spent nights in brilliant or quirky hotels with real surprises. I've also stayed in some real shitholes, but that's the adventure, and if I'm honest, I probably have fonder memories of the crap places and have always had a good laugh about it a couple of days later.

Maybe try winging it for a night or two on your trip and just see where you end up. (start loking from about 4pm onwards!!). you may well find that the unknown adds an exciting dimension to your holiday.
Have fun :thumb.

Been to a couple of places that you mention.

Black Forest- stopped in Titisee Neustadt- hotel was called the Neubierhausle. We got a fantastic offer there for a four night stay- the half board meals were fantastic and a garage to put the bike in.

An area that is nice to look at is around Verdun in Northern France / near southern Belgium. We stopped at a guest house called Two Wheel Moorings. Run by an English couple it was very comfortable.

Motorways...HOW BORING...everyone to their own..why not find a twisty route and stop half way, then you can enjoy the ride...isn't that what's it's all about....it is for me :comfort

A lot of a slog

Call in to Bastogne for lunch and then stay the first night around the northern Black forest. We went to Wissembourg. You can the join the BF around Barden Barden (big place - beware) and then head south at an enjoyable pace.

700km on the first day on motorways would be a killer for my Mrs.

I'm onside with that - I've arranged to take the Advice of getting to the northern area of the Black forest and stop in the locality of Baden Baden found this little place – seems as good as any to start off with (unless anyone has particularly strong recommendations) http://www.hotel-altenberg.de/en/index.html The only trouble is that we will be arriving there on the 10th July but the manager has informed me that the kitchen is closed ?? (but there are a number of restaurants in the area that do food and drink)

I’m getting my itinerary together slowly – and am enjoying piecing it together. It’s a bit daunting starting off planning the route, but with a couple of books and the internet you can cobble together a decent route, I’m now heading down as far as the isle of Elba for a few days before meandering back.

I like the fact that I’m planning this with an assurance of a few recommendations from fellow tossers, but at the same time making the route my own and not nicking an off the peg GDB file.

The ferry is booked in July and the Italy portion is planned and key accoms are booked - the bit in the middle of the black forrest and Italy (the alps) is still to be poured over with the aid of John Hermanns book, a Michelin map google maps and Budweiser ! :beerjug:

I’m loving the planning now I’ve got into it…. Hope it all works out. :thumb2

The planning is half the fun :beerjug:

Try leaving a few stops un-planned, but with a general destination in mind. This gives you some flexibility to stop if you get to a place you both like the look of/when you have both had enough for the day.

Discovering a hidden gem is part of the exploration.

Also I have yet to come across any places which are not biker friendly. :thumb2

I found www.booking.com useful last year when arranging accommodation for a trip involving up to 12 people. We changed our mid a few times and the website allows you to cancel a reservation as long as it is at least the day before your arrival. You pay the hotel directly when you get there. That way, you can pre-book your accommodation but if you decide to stay somewhere an extra night you simply log on or phone up to cancel the following days.

Find my hotel reviews here, one in the Black Forest, 1 in Limone sul Garda & 2 in Austria.
