Accuracy of miles to go readout

Count yourself lucky to pessimistic fuel gauge - much better than an optimistic one! I had to push my GS nearly a mile to a petrol station on the way to work this morning after it ground to a fuel-starved halt inFulham on my way to work this morning... with 17 miles showing on the screen!! Anyone else had a similar experience?

How many miles had you got out of that particular tank?

Alas, after all the cursing and pushing, I was so happy to find fuel that I forgot to look at the trip counter. The warning light normally comes on at around 145/150 miles saying about 38 miles to go. I might have to strap a petrol can on the back and run it dry again, to see if this was a freak one-off.

FWIW, light came on yesterday at 190 odd miles, filled up at 220 with 12 miles left showing. Put in 20.2 litres - probably could have got a little bit more in but I got bored (haven't done the fuel filler mod).

run it dry again

I think that is meant to be bad for the cat (though I suppose, if it has happened once anyway, WTH)

Thanks for your replies Paul and Gonzo. I think you're right about the possible damage to the cat Paul - I wonder if the warranty will cover a damaged cat resulting from a woefully innaccurate fuel gauge?!

I only managed to put 19.9 litres in after running dry, so obviously I'm not sticking as much in as some of you guys (which would explain the lower mileage I'm getting on a "tankful"). But it still doesn't give me much confidence in the 'miles to go' gauge though..... 17 miles to go, my a*se!!
