ACer laptop battery problem

I've got an Acer aspire 1650 laptop. The battery was changed for a new one as it was only lasting for 20 mins. The new battery was charged overnight. When I turn the laptop on, it fires up for about 5 secs then turns off (at exactly the same point each time I try it). The acer power management page doesn't register the battery and cannot read how much power it has. I've posted this in case there was a simple solution to this, as I'm guessing that it might have to go back to acer. That means at least a week without UKGSER and Toxic Brittany .

just having to return my Acer 17" LCD monitor after 16 months, after a sort of 'popbang' noise, which I guess was the PSU expiring.
