My wifes laptop is misbehaving. It won't start up and displays the following message:-

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable

PXE-MOF: Exiting Broadcom PXE ROM. operating system not found

Does anyone have any ideas?

Looks like it is not seeing the bootable harddisk and is attempting to try and boot an operating system from the network. The PXE info is a network boot that is automated from the network card. Computers tend too try looking for boot in an order i.e. Floppy, CD, HDD, Network and then fail if nothing boots

if it was a PC I'd say rip the lid off and check all the connecting cables etc - bit more difficult with a laptop.

So suggest that if you know how to get into the BIOS (usuallly something like hold down F12 or Del whilst booting) see if the BIOS can see the harddisk.

If it can't then probably needs to see a repair man. If it can then possible corruption of the OS boot files

I dont know what I am talking about here, but just in case:
My Dell has Windows loaded on NTFS, and Media Direct on FAT32. Plus another partition that contains all of Dells preloaded shit (special offers) that is designed to reload all that shit if you dare to wipe and reload the operating system.
When you wipe and reload it goes looking for the partitions you have deleted and refuses to boot if it cant find them.
