acer laptops?!

They are great machines for the price, also take a look at Fujitsu Siemens (FuSi) they do comparable machines.

They're pretty good.
Better than some considerably more expensive Laptops I've bought (HP/Compaq , Dell , Toshiba).
They run very well on XP Pro if you can get your hands on one.
Just remember to remove all useless the free demo programs that come with it (same as any laptop).

I'd definitely buy one again.

Acer

:bow Great laptops, but I'm sure someone will be along shortly to rip them to shreads. Bit like a 12GS I suppose........:aidan

We have one 3 years now, no bother from it. It is still going even after I spilt a glass of red wine over it :blast

I bought one for my son last autumn. The laptop has worked fine (it was a Gemstone one from laptopsdirect.co.uk via Quidco for a 5% rebate)

My son takes it to/from college and to his girlfriend's place. I paid for Acer's return to base accidental damage insurance. As the lad has managed to scratch the screen and damage the keyboard, I can confirm that Acer's repair service is excellent.

Considering the rough way the thing gets handled I am very surprised that it reliably boots up and connect to the wifi network evey time.

I've had a couple from work and treated them very badly, both took a couple of years abuse before showing signs. I currently have an HP to replace them. I dunno if it's Vista and 1gb ram but it's cack in comparison to the acers.

you need to think about the warranty as much as anything on a purchase like this and this is where Acer fall down, - or certainly did within the business world when I was in the hardware industry 2 years ago (working for a tier 1 manufacturer that is mentioned in this thread) we would walk all over Acer every time as their warranty was always return to base, - and faulty laptops from them would be missing for sometimes months on end. Whereas others would have a next business day onsite warranty.

In the laptop world you have Dell, HP and Toshiba as the top 3 players; the BMW of this world. An Acer is a bit Renault Laguna, - will do the job, but without any class, and the service should it go wrong will be shite...:augie Unless you are the artsy type then go for an Mac Airbook, but susoect that you are not if you are even thinking Acer :P

now having looked at the link, it has a Celeron processor, and only a 1 year warranty. A 3 year warranty rakes it up to over £400. Look like it has a plastic case rather than mag alloy and hinges look a bit small (that is where laptops fail) - it is actually a bit more Nissan Micra than Renault Laguna..;)

would n't go there if I were you, - but that is me, - having worked in the hardware industry for years my view is tainted.

If that is what you are looking to spend then it will do the job of browsing and a bit of Office, although with Vista you have to be careful which version of Office you install, - probably won't like the free Star Office!

good luck m8, sure despite my negativity it will be fine, it is damn cheap! I remember when laptops were £1800!! Oh yes that's why I moved out of hardware!

Acers

last year on our trans am trip one of the participents had a three year old Acer
this was carried inthe panniers on his gs and had arough ride, I used it several times no probs. Got a good free wireless connection in Panama city by sticking the antenna on the hotel window worked every day between 8.30 & 1730 hrs! so I would recommend them and if in the market I would have one.

cheers...thats good to read :)

mine pics up a good signal even out in my garden

had one warranty on mine, dealt with fast and to trouble, unlike my sony, that took over 5 week

Acer's are alright.
My mates got one that's about three years old.
He uses it sometimes out on his bike to record his journey. Puts laptop in a rucksack on his back and then attaches a web cam to the laptop. Still works perfectly well :)
