So, having downloaded the new version 2.6 for the SP III, I unzip the file and get the Unit set up.

Mains adaptor together with Serial Plug............get to the rear of my 3 month old Laptop and go to stick it in,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

No Serial Port..............!! 3 USBs, Firewire, but no Fekkin Serial!!

Question then is, anyone know of an adaptor to rectify this situation..........?

I found a lead on one of the GPS Suppliers Site, but at £52.00 they are avin a Larf for 2 plugs and a length of Cable!!!

Sorry - totally irrelevant .
Not all the USB to serial adapters work with Garmin GPSRs. I know the Belkin ones do tho.

I have the same problem with my Dell Latitude.

Belkin (PCWorld) do a USB to serial port adaptor. Pt # F5U103. It's a bit bulky but I've carried it all around Europe for a couple of years and it still works. It will, however, cost you close to the £52 you were complaining about!!

I've an idea that Garmin actually make one themselves.

Can someone clarify if there is enough voltage in the USB output to drive an SP3 ?

ie - can you get a usb to sp3 cable - using a converter cable or not - that supplies power and data ?

or is this wildly optimistic ?

If not - how do you get enough voltage out of a laptop to power an SP3 ?

cheers

Phil

According to the SP3 hand book, the SP3 needs 10/32 v on its plug coupler - USB provides 5v

Great idea Phil, but the GPSR's demand more current than the USB outlet can supply - for that reason, it can't be done, even if the voltage issue Ebbo mentions could be addressed.

I'm not looking to power the SP III from the USB, I have the Transformer for that.

I just need a way of connecting to my Laptop that doesn't have a Serial Port...........:( which I didn't notice when I bought the Thing......

Don't cha jus hate it when that appen's.............
