Hi

I'm looking for some advice/recommendations for a small tank bag (approx 5 litres) for a 2018 R1250GS.

I asked in my local dealers recently and was told that most people go for an after market tank bag (possibly because the small BMW tank bag isn't currently available - the dealers order system had them "greyed out"), but that you had to be careful if the bag was attached via a ring on the fuel cap as these could cause problems (presumably with the "keyless" lock on the fuel cap) if they weren't fitted squarely.

So does anyone have:

  • recommendations for a small tank bag
  • know of any issues when attaching tank bags via a "ring" around the fuel cap?

Thanks for any suggestions/advice

Ride safe!!

What do you need to store/keep in the small tank bag? If it's only small/day to day items, would they fit in a handlebar bag?

Alternatively you could consider something like a Kriega Us-5 and secure it to the rear luggage rack?

Thanks DJ - will have a look at handle bar bar.

I'm after something "in front" (have top box/panniers behind) - I have often in the past used the Channel Tunnel, and find tank bag useful for tickets/passport etc. and when riding to have small camera, loose change etc easy to hand

I went from a BMW bag to the new version of the SW Motech. Benefits for me are that I can avoid paint scuffs and a rather untidy look, as well as easily interchange bag sizes - which is something you might want to consider at a later date.

I have the PRO Daypack tank bag as a 'daily', which is 5-8 litres (i.e. extendable) and the Pro City bag (11 to 14 liters) for travels (I don't like huge tank bags, and I'm not keen on handlebar bags). I find both suit the purpose really well. They are sturdy well made. Not totally waterproof, so they also come with a outer liner, though I think that would be for downpours. They also come with a corded bag for storage.

I can fit a small bottle of water, something to eat, plus a few odds and ends in the pro daypack. You could consider the micro-tank bag (3-5litres) but given that the pro daypack is small, I can't see the point.

Fixing the tank ring is very straightforward, but you do have to ensure that you only tweak the bolts as other wise I find it can interfere with the clean opening of the tank cap.

Pricey, but I like them very much. I've bought a couple of other sw motech farkles, and I have to say that from what I've seen they make quality items (better than certain other german aftermaket companies, ahem).

I used a Givi 5L tankbag fixed to a fuel cap tankring on my last 3 GS’s, including one with keyless, without any problem,. Handy for keeping wallet, phone & puncture repair kits. Plus damp chamois cloth in easy access side pocket for cleaning visor.

I have / use a couple from the Givi Tanklock range: ST611 (6 litre) and ST612 (15 Litre), they are absolutely great. Easy to attach, clip on and clip off removal when going into a petrol station / cafe etc. and also with the additional power connections available you can charge your phone and other devices on the move.

I have never heard of the tank ring problem before, I have one and it is solid with zero effects to the bike or paintwork etc. Great system and great bit of kit.

Here’s my SWMotech mini tank bag

+1 for this, easy on and off, and somewhat Tardis like, used for 4 years no issues with tank ring.

Doesn't look too small, and looks right at home there.

It’s 5-8 ltrs, barely takes my keys, my shades, wallet (which is obviously very fat due to my deeply disturbing desire to collect receipts for no reason whatsoever), a woolly hat and a power pack for charging the packtalks.

I don’t have it extended to be fair, but I agree it’s a great size (side view to show how little it hangs over).

Ah, it the pro daypack then. Hangs over on the GS as well (not that it looks out of place)

I use a Givi ST605B tank locked bag which I have coded to my ignition key. It can be left on the bike at all times.
