Hi all, I have an Illustrator file (AI file extension) that I want to open and use in Fireworks 8. It has different elements or layers that I want to manipulate independently to use elsewhere. Problem is I don't have Illustrator or Photoshop. Fireworks will not allow the illustrator file to be imported into fireworks. If anyone has access to Illustrator or photoshop, I would be grateful if you could either convert it to a format I can use with layers intact, or if you could save specific elements of the illustrator file to separate jpeg files that i could then use. If you can help, the dropbox location is here. https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/41571062/scale line drawing.ai

(if the link doesn't work, I can create a new folder as this was passed to me so not sure if there is security)
Thanks

i have both however I'm busy on a gig at mo

might try and have a look later

well I can open it but it looks like a really old version of AI and it wants some updates to the source materials

I don't have time right now but will have another look later

so can I just clear up in english what do you want?

my version does not recognise the fonts or want to seperate the layers it's a single image with locked elements

and what files does fireworks accept?

this might be easier download the creative cloud from adobe as a trail version. it'll give you all the fonts and all that old shit.... I can open the file but can't seperate it as it looks like a single layer and the font set I have does not want to seperate from the back drop.

I'll attach an image but it crushed as the spacing is off the old file and when I converted it became wierd looking (or it might look like that)

looks like a big graphic for a 44 foot trailer?

if your okay to put a copy up here I'm than happy to upload a image grab

The original seems like a very big file for what it contains. If I open it with Illustrator CS5 it takes ages to open then comes up wit ha box saying "This file contains text that was created in a previous version of Illustrator. This legacy text must be updated before you can edit it." Options OK, Update and Cancel follow. Hitting Update brings up a pair of missing fonts (Titillium-Regular and WildRide) that I don't have then brings up three graphics on a single layer. Save as offers a variety of file types I've never used before (Illustrator isn't one of my skills, it comes with the rest of the Creative Suite) but not .jpg. It will however, export in any number of formats but without the layers I'm not sure how much use it is to you. It will also open in Photoshop but again with only one layer.

The file is massive because all the photos are embedded in high resolution.
Looks to me like a bus overlay. Those pics can be in much lower quality.

I'm missing font files as well, so I cannot really export it.

One option is to export it as an .eps so you can open it and import the single bits maybe.

We could try the Eps route if you can please. If there is an option to save as an older Eps version please do as I believe fireworks can import those. Other than that, I will go back to source and see if he can do as asked, again...

thanks. No joy, fireworks give an internal error message. Ill go back to source and pester them or try the cloud trial download option. Thanks all

I tried it on AI 5.1 and bridge the font looks like one bought so may not be standard hence why unless you have it loaded it try and replace it with some crap which looks bad and is all out of proportion to the graphic.

creative cloud is your best best I can get the lovely kate to look at it but she's our graphic bird and would send me a bill.

I don't anything with AI and only use eps files to make gobo's

:)

I can save it as a TIFF or a Jpeg but it'll be one layer

put a test slide up to show you, then took it off as it might be confi material

Hi, nothing confidential. Its my truck and the AI is the vinyl wrap design. I asked for the artwork so I could replicate the feel etc on the website but he seems a bit non plussed to make it all available promptly...
Richie, try this link, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/41571062/scale line drawing.ai
or this link, https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...ted].eps.zip

I'll keep trying. PS cloud isnt available to me as I am on an XP or Linux machine. Needs 7 or mac etc. Going to try download a trial version of AI now but fear similar...oh well, worth a try.
Thanks All

If you want it as it is (font fucked) drop me a PM and I'll save the three images as medium size files tiffs or Jpeg but I fear it won't help cos the font is all squashed to shit and looks crap.

if your paying him he should cough up.... after all it's yours once you've paid your the client

Ask him to trace the type (if you don't need to edit it) and re-send the file.
Also, for god's sake, downsample the pics ;)
