I've managed to source an Adv tank for my standard 1150GS and have been trying to find the internal parts (just like the proverbial hen's teeth of the 31 litre tanks). Could someone tell me the difference between the standard internals compared to the Adv internals? Is it the float arm that is longer/shorter on the Adv version or something less obvious? The next (stupid) question is, can you fit an Adv float arm to the standard internals to allow for the larger quantity of fuel? Many thanks.

I did this swap over 20yrs ago and just swapped the standard GS internals across. Everything still works perfectly well, but the fuel gauge doesn’t start falling until you’ve done about 75-90 miles (depending on how you ride them…😉). I wouldn’t bother waiting for rocking horse sh1t to surface - just get it swapped and revel in not having to fill up or stop so often 👍

Thanks Paul. I did previously have an SE ADV tank (should never have sold it) on my previous standard GS and swapped the internals over, but it was annoying not knowing when the tank was getting empty for re-fueling. I used to rely on the odometer.

If you can be bothered you can bend the float arm. You may have to do it a few times before you get a reading you’re happy with.
I remember the first time bending the float arm was when we swopped tanks on Whattons bike….. took the pair of us about 10 minutes trying to work out which way to bend it :D

That’s why you should drink beer after the jobs finished :D

Did that on the other one Neil but was (very) unsure how far to bend it. Can you bend it too far?

Once I got used to it, I could tell how many miles I had left by looking at the odometer and fuel gauge. I think that’s pretty much what you do with any fuel gauge, but it takes a few tanks before you get the hang of it, I suppose.

Fit it, make sure you use a new o-ring, well its best to.
Max fill the tank, zero the odo, and ride.
Get to about half way on gauge, fill up. See how far you went and work it from there.
Thats what i did, except i fitted it it the night before a two week trip.
Couple of liters to get to the servo, max fill, then about 200km, max fill and then 560km.
Got to that fill point and had about 2liters left.
Did some other long sections that trip, had to fill up when there was fuel, because wouldnt have made it otherwise, and got an idea of how far could get.

Fill it, zero the trip meter, ride until it runs out, make a note of the mileage then put in the spare gallon you took with you. Ride to the garage, refill both then repeat. Average it out, job done.

I’ve killed off 32 litres of Shell Oil’s finest in just 165 miles and ran out as I turned into the petrol station. All it took was 4 laps of IOM at speed… It’s usually much more like 300 miles, honest… The poor fuel gauge didn’t know whether it was coming or going 🤣

The average was always given as 10miles/litre for the 1150 :nenau
