Adventure Tyres - again!

Tarty or not, I think the Adventures looks great with knobblies. However, as I'm unlikely to ride mine off-road which tyres give the best ride and handling compromise against macho looks? Thoughts are; Pirelli Scorpion MT90 A/T, Conti Trail Attack and standard fit Anakees. Ride as many twisties as I can, but my OE Michelins are pretty squared off at 8,250 miles. With all year use they need to be good in wet and dry. Suggetions please...

Get real Man try asking a Sports rider what they get per tyre!

A guy with a K1200GT (new type 07 Model) has just informed us he's just on his THIRD rear and just his second front @ 6000miles!!!

I was lucky to get 1800 mile sout of my Ducatti F F S

Tyres Metzeller Tourance get my vote for confidence inspiring!

I have the Conti Trail Attack, and just like the road attack they stick to the road in all weathers, not had a single slide from them yet, and I have tried to push them. Been on the bike for 4000 miles now and hardly look worn, although I cant seen to get rid of that last 4mm of chicken strip on the sides like I could with the Tourance.
I used tourances for years, covering over 80,000 miles on different bikes over the last 5 years. Now that I've tried the Conti's I won't be going back, even if they don't last as long:thumb

I have battlewing on my 1200........i ride the twisties all the time and they have never let me down.....startin to flatten off a bit now but i have done 6k on them, bit still loads of life left in them..........once these have reach the end of their life i fancy some of the michelin road attack or pilot road 2.....as i fancy a totally road bias tyre........tourance are a fab tyre as well...lots use them on here..............its all down to personal taste....

Conti Trail Attaks get my vote. They are simply superb in all conditions and make the bike feel very planted.

Don`t think they will last as long as a Tourance but it`s a better tyre IMHO.

Done 4000 and squaring off but I do spend a fair bit of time on the M way!

Despite all the millions of kilobytes and words written about tyres, is it not the case that until you (one) has actually paid your hard earned $ on something new, unless you buy the cheapest rubber out there, you won't know!?!

8K on a set of tyres is pretty darn good! and although the Anakees get a bit of a slagging in some quarters, they are pretty good.

I've got Tourances on mine and the only time I've had the slightest drama was when this happened a couple of days ago...

I went for a ride, keeping to A-roads because of the autumn leaves littering so many B-roads. I'd picked up a follower in the form of a Fireblade rider and so, as usual :blast, was trying to up the pace a little. Things were going fine and he seemed very content to tag along behind. I crossed the brow of a hill and headed down a downhill stretch (as you do) when a guy in a pick-up decided to pull out in front of me. Barsteward! However, no problem, thinks I, I'll just overtake him. I change my line a tad, start to accelerate when Mr Barsteward turns right without indicating! BRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAKE!! BRAKE HAAAAARD!!! Rear wheel locked up momentarily and I felt the back gently slide out. Let off the rear brake a tad and the tyre tracked in line again. Changed line to undertake Mr Barsteward and the drama was over!

I was braking seriously hard and the Tourances coped as well as any I've had in such situations.

:thumb2

PS. Cue all ABS-equipped owners to have a go at me for choosing non-ABS :D

Non ABS bikes have more feel and modulation. My ABS servo jobbies are a bit wooden 'much less obvious feel' but you get used to that. Anyway it's fun to play in the gravely bits.

If I was looking to change tyres, I'd be looking at the Tourences. They seem to be very good all round tyres with an excetional ware rate. I used to run on Anakees, getting 11000mls from a rear and 16000mls from the front.
Changed them for TKC 80's back in May. I'm well impressed how good they are both in the dry and the wet 'they do what I want them to off road too' :thumb

I've sofar managed to get 9000mls from the pair and expect to get aproximately 11000mls from the rear and god knows what from the front.

Most of my riding 'to be honest' is in town following trainees. But you've only got to look at my 2mm sissy lines to see just how good the things are. The feed back is very good, cornering in the rain they will let you know when to stop pushing. You can feel them starting to walk (if you get what I mean) you don't realy get that with a conventional modern tyre 'grip, grip, grip gone springs to mind' the TKC will tell you when it's time to back off.

You can guess what I'm going to be riding on this winter :thumb Wonder if I can get 20000mls from the front? afterall they say you use two rears to one front with TKC 80's :augie

How many miles!!!!!!!!!!!!

Assume you're wearing the knobbles completely off then running them as cut slicks :D

Seriously, I've just got 4.5k miles out of my lest set of Tourances & they're completely sh@gged - had several sets now & never got less than 6k (usually 7) are they making them of softer rubber? My riding style is in no way mental & hasn't changed significantly. Bloody good tyre tho' but on reports will probably try Conti T Attacks next, saw a guy on Scorpions this last (long) weekend (rode for 1400 miles with him in "Gods own country") & he was awesome but was on a KTM not a GS.

Would you honestly recommend TKC 80s for 'normal' road use? My only off-road use is likely to be across a road-side verge or a gravel driveway; but they look so darned good. And what about vibrations etc. Would I get hacked off with them on a long motorway run?

If you're not planning to go off road... Don't bother with thr TKC's. Especially at this time of year.
The TKC's are very good in the dry and not-so-bad in the wet, but don't last on the road.

If you're planning to try your hand at a bit of trail riding, the road tyres will suffice for most occasions anyway (except muddy slopes)...

Anakees are tough: Rode on a flat rear, on a dirt road for 30km.
It stayed on the rim and when the 2 punctures were "stringed" it took me home (from Romania) +2,000 miles before I replaced it.

If you intend to ride predominately Motorway and 'A' roads use the road orientated tyres eg Anakees, Tourences, and others.
I wouldn't wast my money on road bike tyres like BT020's and the like. Considering you could be getting nearly double the mileage from a cheaper tyre :nenau

A very good point; I do a bit of off roading, which is why I fitted the TKC's. Tourences are proving rather good off road in the dry we're finding, 'SHMBO has them on the 650' and indeed I was planning to fit these for the winter. But I'm comfortable enough with the TKC's to keep them on right through.

As for the ware rate. as posted above you will see I already get exceptional mileage from even the TKC's 'the same as I get from Anakees in fact' :nenau

I think the important thing with any tyres; is that if you are relaxed and comfortable with the way they work you will enjoy them and get good mileage from them.

We can only tell of our experiences and opinions, yours and others might be very different opinions and experiences.
You'll only really find out for yourself if you put the miles in and try the differences 'though this sadly often ain't possible' :(

Good luck. Make sure you have fun trying ehh :thumb
