advice for changing dial up 2 broadband

Im looking at changing from wannadoo dial up & go onto b/b but unsure on who to use & if the difference in price is worth it?
ive noticed that some have a download limit of 2g is this enough for a film? & do you have to pay extra to download things like programmes,music & films or do I use peer sites.
As u can tell im a little unsure of wot u get so any advice would be greatfully recived.
Also how long does it take to change thew connection & do I have to contact BT

Most definately change as soon as you get the chance.......you'll never go back.....in fact, (and i know this sounds a bit sad but wtf) if I were moving house now, one of the criteria for a new area would be whether it had BB capability or not.

2g is enough to d/load most films, but be wary.....its not as much as it sounds , specially for a month's surfing when you get used to the delights of BB.........

Opinion is of course divided here about the morality of peer to peer downloading......personally I love it and have a fine and ecclectic music collection (and i still buy stuff if i like it....so they haven't lost sales from me personally), but you'll be astonished what's out there to d/l.........I can guarantee that the first three weeks of your BB connection will see you leaving the PC on with a dozen albums of stuff coming down the line a night from Kazaa or similar ;)

If, like me, you play any online games, BB will turn you into a LPB and you'll enjoy the whole thing far far more.....and discon deaths will be a thing of the past :D

There are a couple of great sites that summarise and test all the current BB alternatives....can't remember the url offhand and I'm not at home so i can't look it up, but will post it later unless some other geek can get it up here first.:rolleyes:

PS I have a 512kbs connection...it's fas enough for seamless web browsing, and perfect for gaming........i could get a 1mbs link for another tenner a month but even with my high use and seedy download habits, i haven't bothered yet.....if i'm after something big, i just leave it churning away overnight :D
 
I have a 512KB broadband connection provided by Plusnet As others have said even if you are wanting to download or fileshare 512KB is enough. Just make sure you choose a provider who doesn't set download limits, mine doesn't and I pay less than £20 per month.

You don't have to contact BT but you do need to retain your BT phone line. If you have a cable provided phone line then you'll have to go with them for your broadband.

They've more info than you'll ever need and a lot of feedback from users.

I use Pipex "wires only" at the moment which appears quicker than previous accounts I've had (Totalweb & NTL). Pipex have some big pipes onto the internet and use a pure IP backbone. No restrictions on download and no setup fee.

Watch out for hidden costs like modems and setup. Also, length of contract 'cos they do differ.

Once you've experienced broadband, you'll wonder how you ever lived without it. I must get out more.

Stop boasting ya buggers.

Here in Ireland broadband provision is absolutely shite. Despite Eircom buying just about every billboard in Dublin to advertise it, as soon as you get out of the city there is absolutely nada.

I am stuck with a crap dial up connection and no sign of any b/b in the near future. Eircom w***kers.
 
I use NTL cable. Delivered through the set top box into a router. It gets some fairly heavy useage with 2 kids and me.

Online gaming with the game cube is excellent,and have never had any problems, their tech support is also pretty good.

Alternativeky find a decent supplier and id your line is good you'll pick up a 512 package that gives you what it says on the tin and you can get 20:1.

It sometimes is dependant on where you live as to whether you have a variety of suppliers Have a cable company laid cable outside your house? I use NTL at 512 and only "play" at downloading but even simple stuff like web browsing is more enjoyable - the pages appear as you request them with minimal delay even for big photo's etc. I have a combined TV / BB & Phone deal and its cheaper than I was paying for SKy / phone and the bill for dial up. Good luck - but beware the first few weeks you'll be locked away with the computer!
