Rather urgent question folks: I,m stuck in Italy, and I went over a big bump, and my rear paralever bearing is creaking like b@ggery when I "bounce" the bike. Otherwise seems OK. I just had it replaced 3000 miles ago. Do you think I'm Ok to go back home from here on it, or do I need to go to the nearest BWM dealer ? Obviously, I,d like to take it home directly.
Thanks in advance,
Peter

Better stop bouncing the bike i reckon.:D

Can you feel any play when you try to flex the rear wheel?.
Any other noises when you rotate the wheel on centrestand?.
You can adjust the paralever bearings if needed.

Earplugs in for the rest of your trip.

Creaking won't cause you any problems while riding. You'll be safe until you get home.

I rented a 1200GS in Spain last year and took it to Italy. Was warned about the new rear brake pads before I set out. They lasted a little over 2000kms till they were done (faulty batch).
On the directions of the bike renter, I rode into the nearest BMW dealer, who replaced them and gave the bike the once over. I was pooping myself over the charge to then be pleasantly surprised.

About £6 for the labour. NOT at all like our UK prices.

If you are at all worried, I wouldnt hesitate in returning to a BMW dealer in Italy again.... prob cheaper to get it fixed over there than to do so at home.:thumb

Are you sure it's the paralever bearing?

Check the rear shock mount - they can creak like mad if dirty or slightly twisted (hence rubbing). Perhaps the big jump moved the joint/muck slightly.

Good luck..........

Many thanks for the prompt advice :bow
I'll look it over for free play and rear shock, and keep going.
Some serious holes in the road here (cortina - d'ampezzo, not ford), but amazing scenery and 38 C heat yesterday.

What's with these 1150's? Happened to one of ours in Italy :nenau

Better stick with the 1200 :D

Creaking

I find it'me nowdays not the bike!./ possibly your rear sock espcially if it' a1200. During our jolly jaunt las uyear one six month old 1200 got through 3 new rear shocks in 21000 miles!!.
Don't worry have a few vinos and earplugs and enjoy yourself somthing to
talk about down the pub when you get back!!.

Rear creaking

Okay Gasman, now for the doom and gloom.
Two weeks ago whilst coming back from Portugal on my 850GS, I started to get grinding now from the back end; you could feel it when you spun the wheel by hand, so I assumed bearing.
I carried on for 300 miles, it got worse and when below 50MPH the bike wallowed.
Next morning I checked the bike and I had 2 inches, yes 2 inches of side movement when I grabbed the tire.
Now, on a bike with a double sided swinging arm I would have carried on home. At the very worse I would have needed bearings, an axle and in its most extreme, a hub.
But, as my bike is single sided, I wondered what the heck was holding it on.
We rode gingerly to the BMW dealer in Salamanca where we were spending the night and 8 hours later and 439 Euros lighter I had a new bearing etc.
I couldn't get clarification as to whether the wheel would have come off, but with my wife on the back I didn't want to take the chance.
Sorry to be doom and gloom, but think positively, you've got at least two inches of side movement to play with:)
Anyway, the faster you go, the smoother it feels:augie

gasman has creaking when the suspension is "bounced". it's paralever bearings and will have no effect to riding any distance.

Yours was the main crown wheel bearing, completely different. I carry one with me when abroad and can replace it at the road side if need be. But I'd rather not. :D

Rear Bearing creak

Hi Steptoe,

I'd be intersted in knowing, where I could find a 'How To' for changing the main crown wheel bearing.
It's not in Haynes; probably will be in Clymer.
You haven't got a 'How to' print out per chance.
Cheers
John
