Hi

I'm doing some route planning in Mapsource for a trip to the Alps. From the pool of wisdom/experience, can I have some input./advice/suggestion on what speed to set up in the Mapsource configuration to give the most accurate times over mountian passes.

When I compare my time with viaMichelin they are way off??

a lot depends on how fast you ride alpine roads:D

seriously, tho' I find that mapsource estimates are pretty accurate...the driving speeds set in route preferences seem to work out, as we always tend to overestimate how quickly we will ride a route, and yet mapsource always tells us how long it will really take....guess also helps us with all the sightseeing stops , coffees, and so on

our avergae speed in alps tend sto be lower than expected, anyway here is what my mapsoucre settings are, fwiw
highways 75
major 62
collector 35
other 45
residential 25

as a rough rule of thumb we find 250 to 300 alpine miles makes a good full day

enjoy:):)

Agree, I've done the Alps five times and 250 -300 miles is a good days riding in the mountains, taking in lunch & coffee stops etc. More than 300 is too long and you arrive at your next hotel a bit late (I usually set off around 9 to 9.30 am).

Normally I work on 250 miles a day and these days I tend to say if a town/vilage with accomadation is at say 225 I will stop, instead of that one at 250 -275, the next pass could take forever.

Thanks for all the advice chaps! :thumb Made a few changes last night and now it just a matter of getting all the ducks in a row before June!

Have you had a look at John Hermanns Alps and Corsica book? To the west of Cortina there's 17 passes you can do in 400 km, ie 250 miles. He says it's a long day, no sightseeing etc

When are you going there?

Hi John

I've not read the book, but had a quick look on Amazon and it looks good. Will have a look on FleaBay for a copy.

We are planning the trip over 11 days mid June. I'm used to trips with the wife keeping my back warm, and my planning was always geared to keeping her happy. This will be this first trip one-up with some mates, and I thought being one-up (and just blokes) we could do a bit more in a day! So I just wanted to some advice on what is possible but still enjoy the rides.
