Just thinking about next years holiday and having never been there I was looking for some advice.
I will have 10 days and was thinking of taking the ferry to Santander and then doing the Picos, over the Pyrenees, upto the bridge and back again.
Q's ..

Is 10 days enough? (I don't like rushing around)

Is there any off roading to be found?

Is it easy to find cheap hotels in late April / May to combine with some nights camping?

What would the weather be like in the area?

Jim April/May there might still be alot of snow, check out Possu's and pumpys thread they've just come back

Forry thats exactly what I had in mind with those long off roady bits.
What time of year is best do you reckon? I don't really want to go in the middle of the summer as it would be too hot for me.
I'll have to give you a call and find out just where some of these routes are :thumb2

Good point but I am flexible with my 10 days, could do 11 or 12.

Ferry

Plymouth to Santander leaves on Sundays and Wednesdays, going back the other way Mondays and Thursdays

Take Santander out and Roscoff back.

Cheap accommodation in Spain is to be had in Hostels, They are Hotels but without a restaurant.

You can be fairly certain of snow in the Pyrenees in April. Campsites will only just be opening in the higher latitudes at that time of year.

April 2005. Looking into France, there was a fair bit of snow in the sheltered sections.

Well sat in work bored out of my brains looking at next years planner, and looking at what I've got on so far it looks as if this trip or somewhere else will have to be in October now.

Whats it like down there then?

I don't know about October, but I had glorious weather in September. I think, however, the weather is as variable as here in the UK. I seem to remember BHT going in June and it absolutely hissed down for the whole time...

I do enjoy it when people just do things off the cuff :augie

Is that like a quick one off the wrist, then?? Don't unnerstand cockney. :)

Trippy: A group of us did Plymouth - Santander in June this year. Outbound on the Wednesday, arrive Thursday, had a couple of days playing around the Pyrenees, down to Barcelona for the Catalunya MotoGP, then rode back via Millau / La Rochelle / Brittany / Caen for the ferry the following Wednesday afternoon. Fairly relaxed days with not too much mileage, would do it again.

Can't help with anything off-road in that area, though.
