Advice Required if possible?

Hi Guys/Ladies,

Im not sure if this is the right place to start talking about a Funduro, please tell me if its not but...

Im looking at getting one (X Reg) for my first bike, are there any problems I should look out for with these bikes. The one im looking at has only had one owner 34k miles, all servicing done by bmw...

Any replies welcome and appreciated.

The most worrying thing about early F650's is rot!

The Italians have never been great at preventing corrosion (think early Alfa Romeo) so check out the wheel rims & hubs for corrosion, and the engine casings peel quicker than a poorly paid stripper.
If the engine sounds OK and the thing rides straight, with a BMW service history behind it, I'd say you'll be on a winner.

Its about the most sensible site for this make ofbike that I've wandered across.
Many others get all technical all of the time.
Have met up with several of the sites users in the past when they've wandered this far north, so IMHO I can call it a freindly forum.

Sounds lilke a decent enough bike.......the BWM history is good and that's low mileage for a BWM.

The Rotax engine is pretty bullet proof....not hugely exciting but it'll do a tonne and keep up with traffic very happily.

I had one a few years ago......rather stupidly I rode it under a dumper lorry which wasn't particularly clever...it was a god basic bike and though I never put knobblies on it, I've no doubt it would have done some mild green lanes without too much problem.

Check chain and sprockets, wobble anything that shouldn't wobble to see if it does (swing arms, forks, wheels etc) and as long as it all works, sounds a good'un

It actually did about another 200 miles; got dumped in the south of Spain and never ran again!

haway then moggy where you looking at the bike private or dealer.

just the usual . head bearings check for play as the oil is in the head stock area. and melts the grease out of the bearings.

chain sprockets / tyres / corrosion

i had a funduro r reg sold it to a lad in lobley hill not a bit of bother.

moved onto dakar good bike allround much better than these two cylinder thingys. ( he says with pet lip out because he couldn't get a 1150 in the shed)

Well im picking my 650 ST up on friday... R Reg, getting a new back tyre, new pads all round and serviced before I get it. Brand new tax on day of picking it up aswell as a years MOT. No corrosion that I can spot etc... will post some pics when I get it.

dotcaf, I seriously never even saw the FAQ pages to check out the "Always asked question.." Thought it may have been a bit of a dumb question when I was typing it but couldnt find an answer to it using the search button. Thanks again.

One more question, are the f650 ST's compatible with all of the GS bits. i.e. seat etc.

Dunno about the ST but the GS is a great bike, have been abusing mine for years & got 60k miles on it.

Some other things to check :-
- suspension linkage bearings & bushes (look for play on the swingarm)
- water pump shaft & seals (look for leaks/stains near the weep hole - front LHS crankcase)

The simple answer moggy mate is No the f650gs is totally different frames / plastics / seats from the older funduro 650 / funduro 650 st

Ah ok, thanks Andy. Just my seat on the bike im getting has a small nick in it, which i want to rectify as soon as possible.
