Hi, ordered and fitted new non bmw starter, slightly longer than original but still fits ok but struggling to tighten rear bolt what do you people use or recommend tool wise.
I have long reach torx but cannot get purchase on it and dont want to remove exhaust. Cheers

short torx and a wobble bar or 2 or a u/j .
+1

Star torx socket on a u/j fitting to a short bar , into a long bar or vice versa - start by hand and i only used the ratchet to nip it up

Which unit did you fit?

The two OE varients were the same dimensions if i recall

The only aftermarket unit i can recall was an Arrow? and it should drop straight in

Thanks for reply, it was a aapoldham, and yes fits direct though the motor is longer than original and cover does not fit, but I modified the cover to give solenoid a bit of protection and after removing gear selector link I used an extended T45 with extension bar and 1/4" ratchet. Since I got the bike in 2010 it was always a slow starter, this new one fires up a dream. When I have time I will strip old solenoid down and turn contact plate and file the bolt heads and should be good for a spare or if anyone needs one. Incidently fault was just click from solenoid but not actuating motor.

The solenoid, does not appear to be a separate / rebuild able part :(

Actually there is a video Ono YouTube of an Indian guy stripping solenoid down to contact plate reversing it and filling head bolts worked a treat

what do you people use

Awsum Erminio, cheers I think a universal swivel link is on the tools list for me but managed to get sorted cheers though.

I put the swivel knuckle into the torx bit, and then into the extension bar, less weight to have to contend with

This…

the main problem I had was trying to fit the starter in the hole… it was a lovely summer day so I thought I would do it in the garden rather than the garage…. Old one came out easily ….. could I get the new one in?….. could I f…. It would almost go in but not quite… my mood wasn’t improved by the **** in the ice cream van playing his fucking tune way too often and way to long…. And I got so bloody hot!!! Should have had an ice cream…..

Any how I just sort of dropped it an it pretty much went in…. Little wiggle, job done.
