Airheads with kick starters

you have to nudge it round til it's in just the right place, then apply just the right force, at just the right speed and it will mostly start, hot or cold. if i get it right, i just flex my ankle and off it goes.

the only time i ever needed the kick start, the bike had a flat battery, and then i had to bump it.

The problem with the kickstart is it only turns the engine a quarter of a turn. The ignition module has a very short time delay before it powers down the coil and needs to see a pulse from the Hall sensor to wake it up again, if you don't get another revolution in in less than a second or so it powers down again.

You really need points if you want a reliable kickstart. Some folks fit the 1980 points in a bean can units.

the original ignition triggers didn't power down but they cooked the coils if left turned on. The difference between the kickstart ignition module and the standard one is the amount of time it keeps the power on to the coil.

So its like double dekick start ?

I kick started my 80g/s today, it was the first and will probably be the last time,
nice ornament,

i need to replace the fuel hose, after tapping the bings for ages, then spotting a fountain of fuel from the pipe tbat goes through the gap under the airbox :D

And I thought it was just a handle to help you pull it back on the centre stand...............just goes to show how wrong you can be!

I had a very late 1986 G/S that was fitted with a kick start and factory fitted twin discs. I could just about kick start the bike but it certainly wasn't easy and I wouldn't fancy doing it in public:blast:rolleyes: Looked cool though - should never have sold that bike:(

Pulling rank here, but my R50 only had a kickstart - no namby pamby electric start for me then . Took a few kicks but it always started. Flat battery, no problem -it had a magneto !
Canbus .......bollox.
:rob:rob:rob

I fitted a kick start to my old R80/7. It lived outside and my only transport so it was winter insurance. I found it only worked properly after I took the motor to 1000cc with some Siebenrock barrels.

I have a verry nice aire head for sale with a kick starter !!!

Could someone here tell me which airhead models had engines with kick starters.

Or can all airheads be converted to this system, or were they factory options.

I'm on the lookout for an airhead to buy, either R80 - 100GS, and want one with a kickstart but don't know what to look for.

Were they available only on certain models? Or only in certain years? I have no idea, can someone enlighten me?

Thanks in advance, Steve.

I could kick start my r100gs when engine was warm but was such a pig to kick stert when cold that I just wouldn't bother. I'd always imagined it might be useful if I was stranded in some desert area with a flat battery and no way to push start it, but that's probably most likely after a night under stars and with a cold engine so what would be the point. Always liked the look of it though.
