Hello Sgt Bilco, My son and I would like an idea of the cost

also interested in the details.

is there an airfreight option for bike' transportation from/to Russia ?
could anybody recommend a forwarder?

tnx in advance

quick question for you. can a new yorker join in? i was thinking of this ride, but was hesitant because i could not find people wanting to do it. transportation to SF will not be an issue, as i would ride. any ideas of costs without shipping? also is the limit 12 because of shipping or because that is what is comfortable?

i can contribute photos from a canon 7D.

I'm aware that some people have started booking flights to the USA for these trips. However, given that we only have the barest facts about dates and locations: I was holding off on this until Chris organised his get together to give us all the relevant info. I was assuming that some people may determine to fly together so to say - though equally I'm aware some may want to add days either end of the 'adventure' for personal or holiday reasons. Has anybody, including Chris, got a view on this?

All

I'll whack all this on an e-mail at the weekend but I'll put the basic's on here as well:thumb

Flights seem to be going up at an alarming rate so you would need to find a flight pretty smartish. The rule of thumb is you need to be in San Francisco a minimum of 1 day before the start of your trip just to recover from being cramped for 10 hours!! Also, it's always a good idea to be there in good time just to have a ride round the local area and get your eye in as it were.

The bikes will be there on the Wednesday before departure so you will have your steed available if you want to come in really early and I will arrange a trip to Alcatraz as well as a local ride and a BBQ with the best Margarita's in town:ChrisKelly.

Flights need to be to San Francisco International (SFO) and they are direct from London via all the major carriers. It's worth checking around to see what's available and I use a company called the Flight Centre in Glasgow and your contact there is [email protected]. She knows about these trips and she's promised to beat any other quotes so it's worth contacting her. You also get a proper travel pack with tickets etc which is nice:thumb Also, yiou may want to try Air Canada as an option. They aren't direct but are generally very competetive on price and are often good for an upgrade:D

On the way home, you can arrange your flight for the last Saturday if you really need to as we'll be back in SF in the morning as all direct London flights are early evening. However, this doesn't give a margin for error so I would advise booking the next day's flights. The bikes will be loaded on to the container on the Tuesday after we get back so if you want to stay around for a couple of days, that's no problem. The riding around the area is sensational but of course you may of had enough of it by then:augie!!!

The hotel we will be using is the Best Western Novato CA. No need to book yet as I'm negotiating prices with them. There is bus transport from the airport from a company called the Marin Airporter at www.marinairporter.com which goes from arrivals to the hotel :thumb

As for travelling all together, this will prove difficult as everyone will be leaving at different times and days but I will let everyone have a full itinery of everyone's flights when they are booked.

Do you get a discount Mike for having a liking for the male genitalia??????

Why are some people saying flight prices are going up?
The price of oil isn't likely to suddenly rise - more likely to go down: America and Europe are both in an economic mess/slump - so demand for trans Atlantic travel is likely to decrease not increase etc etc.
I can buy a Virgin Atlantic return ticket to SFO (economy class with no stop overs for next week) for about £580 on the Virgin site and £440 on a last minute site. Same flights etc.
Can anybody give me a good reason why I shouldn't go this route next May/June. Bottom line is that I can't believe all the airlines that fly Heathrow to SFO will be fully booked if I can't get a cheap deal (which I doubt). And they'll sure as hell want to fill empty seats so I doubt they'll be trying to price people out of buying from them.
