I'm planning another tosser tour to the US for 2012 but this time up to Alaska. The basic details are below:

Depart San Francisco on 8th July 2012 and return 3rd August 2012. This is the best time to get up tp Prudhoe Bay with the weather being pretty good generally in July.

Start and Finish in San Francisco and the route will include, Pacific Coast Hwy, Vancouver, Whistler, Hyder (Salmon Tail Glacier), Up to Prudhoe Bay via the Dalton Hwy, Top of the World Hwy, Alcan Hwy, Icefields Parkway, Glacier National Park, Hells Canyon and lots more. I'm finalising the final route but that will take a wee bit of time and won't be concrete until late in the day. It all depends on road conditions etc at the time of the trip.

The total mileage will be around 8000 miles and there will be around 500 miles of gravel on the Dalton and TOTW Hwy. It's not too hard but it can get tricky if the weather gets cold and wet. There will be some days we will have to get a move on and will be around 500 miles but that is easy up in Canada and Alaska as there is very little traffic and the views around you are superb. I can promise you will not get bored....!!

I've ridden all these roads and know them well and this trip is very do-able and I will programme a few days off in nice places:thumb.

The bikes will be containered there and back and will be loaded in specialy constructed steel frames to avoid damage.

There will be no camping and we will be using motels along the way. They are cheap enough and a whole lot easier than lugging a tent half way across the world but if you want to do a bit of camping, that's no problem.

Let me know if you are interested and I'll give you an idea of the costs you can expect. I already have a few people from this parish signed up so if you fancy the trip, contact me a.s.a.p as the number will be limited.:thumb

so, besides the 1200GSA, what else will people going on this trip be bringing?
i will be trading in my 650GS twin to get the 1200 before the trip.
i doubt i could tolerate the 650 the entire way.

Be surprised..... The year I was up there I saw more 650's than anything else, mainly KLR650's.

Even saw a 1200GT on the Dalton.

I'll be on my 800 GS. It's more than good enough for the distances and is OK on gravel. If I keep the speed legal the fuel economy is brilliant - 230 miles + on a tank. Perhaps it isn't as comfy as a 1200 but an airhawk will fix that. A 650 will be absolutely fine.

i rode my 650 700 miles once, all i could think of was a comfy chair when i got home. i was majorly stiff. and i have a sargent seat.
i am your typical large American thou, and the 1200 is wider.

The ADV will be prepped to within an inch of it's life for this one.

Hope your bringing your mini screwdriver and cable ties Murdoch :D

I don't know how much you have done this route before, so please excuse me if I stick my nose in too quickly. I have travelled BC, Yukon, Oregon, & California by bike for over 40 years & could offer up some ideas & options you may not find from your location.

Some places may be more advisable to bypass or reroute, due to traffic, weather, distance, etc. Last year, we had 2 major washouts on highways in Alaska from excessively heavy rain (one road closed for several weeks). The paved sections of the Alaska Hwy in Western Yukon forced use to keep the speeds down to 50kmh in many places. July had many days near freezing temps along with the heavy rains in Alaska. Just a heads-up.

Fuel on the Alaska Hwy may demand Jerry cans for some bikes. Only one VERY EXPENSIVE pump between Watson Lake YT & Fort Nelson BC ~ 531km. Similar on the Dalton Hwy in Alaska.

8000 miles (12,000 km) seems like a big chunk to bite off in 4 weeks. It took me 6 weeks to do 10,000 km up there & back from Vancouver, with another 1,000km on a ferry. Good Luck!

www.hellobc.com & www.drivebc.com are 2 good sites to help guide you along.

Apparently all of your noted route (except Alaska) is on paved main roads. If interested in some more gravel or back roads, let me know.

I thought about bringing my R60/2 US but unfortunately it doesn't have heated grips. Three hundred mile range though on a five gallon tank.
Perhaps I should fit grips. Can you get 6 volt versions?

Hi mate, I've ridden the route a couple of times and it's a big chunk for sure but given a fair wind we'll "git 'er done".

We'll be sticking to the published route but I'll be keeping a gimlet eye on the road and weather conditions as I've had about 8 seasons in a day up there. I will always have an alternate just in case:augie

Good luck. I'm available to offer help if needed.
