Allan Jefferies, Monday bike Knackered, Tuesday fixed

Went to work Monday morning bike went up the gear box but would only come down to 4th. I Cleaned and lubricated the gear change late yesterday afternoon still goosed, Southport Superbike couldn't look at it until a week on Thursday. I remembered a conversation with a Preston fella at Rivington Barn the other week who sang the praises of Allan Jefferies in Shipley, so I called them at 17:05 last night, told them it is my only transport they said if I could get there today they would take a look and do what they could. So I put the bike on the trailer dropped the Wife at work and set off up the M62. Arriverd at 09:30 they dropped what they were doing helped me un-load it. 2hrs later all stripped, adjusted, cleaned,gear box oil changed, tested and too much coffee. £40 bargin. They get my vote and future business

Did they tell you exactly what was wrong with the gear box?

Sound like the Jefferies I know!
Had a similar problem when the bike stuck in 5th gear last year - they couldn't do enough - spent a lot of time on it but it seemed, without them saying as much, to be 'pilot' error
Bike due for 18,000 service this week and I know it will be right.
I know some folk crow about dealers but they will do form me.

I've just had the same problem fixed by Bath Road Motorcycles in Bristol. The head service/warranty bloke told me they'd fixed quite a few GS's with this problem.

It seems there's a nylon bush on the gear change linkage, it doesn't wear out but expands due to the heat of the exhaust (he thinks). This prevents the linkage centering properly after changing gear, hence causing problems when trying to go up or down the box.

Anyway the fix was to remove the bush, redrill it to it's original size, then refit it.

I had it done during a service so can't be sure how long it took but I belive it was less than 30 minutes.

What the problem was

Not being an expert on thing mechanical (I prefer the electrickery bit) but apparrently the selector drum? was not returning in the lower gears hence I could select 4,5&6 but not 1,N,2or 3, they striped and cleaned the lever and selector assy it now feels so much looser I suppose you don't notice things getting tighter over time. Having changed the gear box oil to make sure nothing nasty came out they have also noted that it will not require changing at the next service.

Why is it a problem? I have to take a day of to get anything done to the bike so why take it to Southport when they could not even look at it for over a week, the alternative being Manchester, besides the run up and back on the A59 and its various diversions is better than the Motorway. I might live in Preston but I originated in Cheshire (so I am not involved in your local flower power fight)and have lived and worked all points West to the US and East to Borneo, the GS is hopefully going to cover the bits that I missed. The bike will be back up there for its 24000 service at the beginning of May, if I have to pay then at least a want to be treated as a customer and not a meal ticket.
