I saw a couple of months ago these Allit boxes on a hardware store here in Bucharest (the store is Hornbach) and of course in the first second I thought (just like you) I could get myself a nice a "Zega like" panniers set for well under 100 Euros:). In fact are made from relatively thin and cheap tin and they are not water tight :blast and at a close inspection I didn't liked much but this is only my opinion. I think they are ok but only for what is their purpose: to store things in a storage place not to be carried with 100 km/h on a bumpy road.

Does my bum look big in these :augie

They look wide (they're 11" versions) but because Vern's frames are such a tight fit to the bike, they're no wider than the bars. Not as cheap as some of 'tinny' options but you can see where the money has gone - the design and build are worth the difference (in my opinion).

Accomodation sorted

Don't need a tent or B & B at the other end either you can live in one then let the other out for £500.00 per month to pay for food & petrol, smart investment.

You have to watch out for Eastern European stowaways at ferry ports though.
