I am seriously contemplating buying am Alpos Top Box for my 1150 GSA, they retail for less than £100, has anyone experience of them and what size is suggested I want to be able to carry a Schubert C3 Helmet. Also what base plate do the need ?

Alpos are VERY thin, but as you say good value, I brought a second hand touratech for about the same with the plate.

I think that you will have to make your own chap :thumb

want one then

MMh I don't want the hassle of making a plate, I agree they are rather thin 1.2mm compared to 2mm of the Pukka ones, you say you bought one touratech for same money, I want one, I'll post one on wanted and see what happens I suppose, the thing is this is my 1st GSA I love it and I guess I am only postponing the inevitable and delaying a newer bike hence i dont want to spend a fortune on it.

I thought that when I got my 1150 - after all its just a stepping stone to the 1200 isn't it?

18 months on and "no it isn't any more". Plenty of people here have had both and rate the 1150 as the the better bike. I understand your money saving attitude, but don't hobble the bike for a few extra quid or you may not see the brilliant bike that it is.

Hi we make aluminium panniers in different sizes. Frame fitting on the R1150 takes about ten minutes (honestly). We might have a set of second hand ones in stock. Give us a call we may be able to help you. If you want them to take a full-face helmet then you need to go for the Stahlkoffer Pannier System.

Yup I'm on my third :thumb2

I've got away and dabbled with speed (K1300GT) too fast, as in you needed to do 120mph to feel like you were moving at all, plus it was £9000 worth of bike even second hand that needed BMW service to keep the warranty etc and like the 1200 was Canbus so nothing was a DIY repair (Kerching!)

My first 1150 (the one in my Avatar) was £2000 and had done 75,000 I loved it and with Hepco engine bars and the panniers I had fabricated for £50 each I was not fussed if I dropped it....

In fact when a mate asked to ride it and dropped it miss-reading the camber of the road I was more interested in capturing his embarrassment than picking it up!

Then I brought another with only 3000 miles, but I wish I'd kept the 75k one as it felt nice and loose, just worn in like old slippers! :thumb I got knocked off that in a VERY minor spill, but it gave me the chance to get a big payout and buy a much newer bike (that's where the K1300 came in) just one 'proper' trip and it was going (see pics on my sig link) just never had the character of the 1150. Tried a 1200 but nope not for me, so traded in on this site for an 1150 with 22k and a wedge of cash :thumb2

It's now loud with the Wunderlich cat eliminator, I've got a set of engine bars and Verns panniers and a Touratech top box (it's 2 seconds to remove) HID has let me see in the dark and my seat is off to Tony Archer this week to be made into a sofa...

All this done and still with enough cash to have a good 2/3 week trip to Europe later this year.

If I ever sell for another bike, I can unbolt everything and sell it separately as it all adds nothing to the resale in real terms.

Stahlkoffer Pannier System.

Well some encouraging responses thank you, it would appear that i am feeling "Quite normal" about the relationship with my 1150, I love it, so flexible compared to my other bike, 1300 Pan European, I hadn't considered the Stahlkoffer Pannier System. But it would seem that were almost neighbours so will have to have a look what's on offer, but as mentioned this may be only a temporary measure to get my 1st European ride under my belt so I am being very cash concious.

Ride the Autoroutes all day and you'll wish you had the Pan back, ride the twisties and the GS will keep a grin on your face. I've 'done' France in 1 day on Autoroutes and it was 'okay' (my arse knew I'd done it!) after that I've stuck to the French version of out 'A' roads and 'B' where it's worth looking at.

If you have no panniers, try a set of soft bags or look now on eBay for system cases while it's cold :thumb
