JUST LOOKING TO PLAN A TRIP TO THE ALPS IN MID MAY . NOT HAVING BEEN BEFORE , I WAS WONDERING IF THE ROADS WOULD BE SNOW FREE AT THIS TIME OF YEAR ? IF SO WOULD CAMPING BE FEASIBLE OR WOULD IT BE 'BRASS MONKEYS' WEATHER ?:nenau

All the motorways will be open.

All the valley roads will be open.

Many-many of the high level passes WILL be shut, probably until the first two weeks in June. If it says shut on the sign it will be shut. Of course you can go all the way up to find out.... and sometimes work your way through on a bike.... but very often it's a wasted trek only to end up in a deserted ski resort.

Weather? Probably quite nice, very probably still chilly above 1000m though. Expect and prepare for the worst and you'll be fine.

They camp (in a fashion) on the south and north poles, so it will be feasible.... take a wooly hat :D :beerjug:

Depends where

A lot of the higher Cols don't open until mid-May at the earliest. There's been loads of snow here this year so far, and if it keeps up, some of the highest ones could be closed until early June like a few years back.
You can check the condition of them here

Thanks Franco - thats really useful ! What do you reckon about camping ? Does that sound a bit optimistic ?:thumb

As the Alps stretch from SE France to the NE corner of Italy, across the bottom of Germany, Switzerland and Austria and beyond in a massive wall, the weather through the month of May will be, shall we, say, "Al rightish" but difficult to predict with absolute certainty. Fine one minute, loshing it down the next.

Do you camp in the UK in May? If so, it'll be fine down in the valleys. Want to camp above 2000m? Then I guess you know what you are doing anyway.

Check with the local tourist offices as to when the camp sites are open.

Try http://www.wunderground.com/global/UK.html for historical data.

Will you be happy if we all just say, IT WILL BE FINE

If so, there you go. It will be fine.... and, you know what? It probably will be. ;) If it isn't, stop in a hotel or come home, as you will not be able to sue anybody.

When we went to Slovenia a few years ago we had sleet & snow at low level and laying snow on the passes from the Swiss Border untl we left the Dolomites. That was mid in May.

Here you go, Badger999

Here's a really good site http://www.weatheronline.co.uk/weat...1&MOD=&TMX=&TMN=&SON=&PRE=&MONAT=&OFFS=&SORT=

I had a quick look at Geneva in the French Alps.

Pump in the city / town you want and look at all the historical data, day - week - month - year. All the bells and whistles, min / max temp, precipitation, wind speed, sunshine, snow depth, pressure nad relative humidity.

Sadly it does not give forecasts four months ahead but it does give outlooks.

?

Camping? brrr. Took this on Monday. In the summer, this is the road going up the Col d'Allos... won't be any camping here for a few months :Motomartin

Cheers guys ! All really useful stuff - just a case of giving it a try i guess ! At the end of the day if a roads shut you just change your plan -that unpredictability is what makes touring on a bike such good fun !:)
