alps trip

Bourg St Maurice is an excellent base in the French Alps, with some excellent passes nearby, and gob-smacking scenery! Stayed there 3 years ago, and it was my first time in the Alps.

Return journey there this year, then through Switzerland, over the Stelvio (did that 2 years ago), then down into the Dolomites, over the Grossglockner, and then head home.

Northern Alps

Hi Twig, you'll love the northern Alps, we have been many times and we break our journey in Reims. Very nice central pedestrian area for food, drink and people watching. Doesn't stop bikes riding through though which is the joy of France, far more bike tolerant. We tend to stay in a little place called Manigod not far from La Clusaz in the Alps and tour from here. It takes about an hour and a half to get to Chamonix from here but beware, the views are so stunning it could take much longer. Be aware that if it gets really hot, which it can, you can get tired very quickly so daily mileages can drop. We tend to travel no more than 300 miles in a day getting to the Alps.

many thanks

We travelled most of the Route des Grande Alpes from south to north at the beginning of July in 2006, fantastic!!! No pre-booking of hotel accommodation needed, we just turned up in a town we liked and found a room, always with secure parking for the bike. At this time of year it was still pretty quiet.

Montreux

If you are planning a visit to Chamonix then would recommend a stop in Montreux, the view of the lake as you come out of the tunnel above Montreux is breathtaking. Would also recommend not to buy coffee for £5.00/cup in the poncy cafe bar by the lake! Oh and don't be tempted by the chinese restaurant in Chamonix either!

If you venture towards Annecy stop in Grand Bonand

Hotel de la Croix st Maurice on the village square
