Chaps. Is the end of may a good time to do the alps.Would like to go then if poss as i am 40 on 28 may and thought i would do the F1 in Monaco.Making and trip down there though the alps and then back agian though a different way

Excellent time to do it. End of May early June my favourite time in Southern France. Might be a little cold at altitude but the passes should be open by then

There will be plenty of passes still closed in May. If you have specific routes in mind you'd be well advised to check the opening times individually and have alternates planned.

End of May early June? Most should be open rarely more than a couple still closed at this time. Difficult to check them far in advance but yes agree with keeping options open.

We go that time every year, never had a problem, but some of the high ones can and do still have snow!

You can get freak weather any time, the Glockner was closed at end of August last year! :thumb

I took a group of guests over the Grossglockner 26th August, best weather I have encountered, had to sit in the shade at the Edelwiess-spitze (2571metres). Knowing the road and the area I can well believe it might have been closed a few days later.

By the way the Grossglockner also closes for special events-usually only a few hours. The German version of the website carries information-they don't bother to put it on the English version Look here http://www.grossglockner.at/de/service/strassensperren/ Dates and times for two closures next year already-very un Austrian.

Thanks chaps i'll start sorting some routes out now.

You'll be fine.

Going down to Monaco (your primary destination) should mean you will be on the main roads, which 10-1 says they will be open. Of course the higher / smaller passes may well be shut still, but you won't be heading to those.

Freak late snow? Yup, it's possible. If it does, cut your cloth accordingly.

Doing the same thing myself. Might see you on the road.

Sadly 40 was a few years ago for me. :tears

The cheapest place to watch is £70 standing on the ramp from the end of the tunnel down to the harbour. Well, not ON it so much as next to it.

any routes in europe via roscoff or santander please

Hi guys,
Will be travelling Europe again this year in the Vw T5 and not the 1150:(. Last year we went where the wind took us and ended up in Switzerland and further down into Chamonix. We started from Calais due to ferry cost, but there was a long drive up from Cornwall to Dover.
What I am looking for is any recommended routes anywhere! But would prefer the roscoff or Santander ferry. I have around 2 weeks and would like to spend at least 2 nights in each location unless you feel it warrants longer. I have got an awning for the van so campsites are good. Oh and a 10 year old son.
If you are happy to share your previous routes or any locations you feel should be visited, I would be very appreciative.

Many Thanks

Pyrenees and Picos de Europa

If you go to Santander, then heading into the Picos, it is a great holiday, I can recommend an excellent campsite.

We also spent 3 weeks in the Pyrenees, again I can recommend some excellent campsites which are not as busy as elsewhere in France and ideal if you want to stay a couple of nights then move on.

If you are interested, drop me a line and I will send you more details.

Funny how people always ask about doing the Alps at x time of year.

The region is larger than the UK and densely packed with great roads, to do just the "best bits" would take about 3 months solid riding.

I would guess the South of France regions would be best for early / late season, but five of the six highest passes in the Alps are in that region, so if they are on your list then you may be dissapointed. (1. Bonnette 2. Col de l'Iseran 4. Col Agnel 5. Col du Restfond 6. Col du Galibier)

As per "Motorcycle Journeys through the alps and beyond" Red and Blue Squares mark "Best Regions" for number of highest rated routes in the region.

The book lists 75 trips in the Alps and over 300 passes, finding enough for a couple of weeks in May should be no problem
