Altberg boots

Good boots but i'd think not to good if you come off in them not too much ankle protection... but like any gear you take your pick and weigh up the pros and cons

Got me a pair of these Soubirac boots after being well impressed with the jackets they make- waterproof so far and very comfy.

A mate of mine was wearing Altbergs when he came off a couple of years ago whilst touring Europe. His GS was totalled and he trapped his left foot under the bike. Although his boots were VERY badly damaged we both recon he would have lost his foot without them.

Then, as a bonus, Altberg rebuilt the boot cutting out the damage and replacing with new.....all for about 40quid.

Top boots and service IMHO

A similar thing happened to me, right boot badly scuffed and a hole in the leather of the heel section. Leather replaced, worn velcro replaced, resoled, new insole, new gortex lining, and all for the standard refurb price of £39.99. Like a new pair of boots, well chuffed.

My foot didn't get away scot-free, I had six fractures; four to metacarpels, a fracture to the ankle and a fracture to the heel bone. The sturdy design disign of the sole prevented crush damage to the foot and I believe the fractures I received would have happened with most other boots. The hole to the heel leather was impact damage, it didn't penetrate all the way and the thickness of the leather layers meant it kept it's shape, otherwise my heel would have been completely shattered (I believe).

Whilst the boots are pretty comfortable, I was impressed by the initial customer service.

Note that this did not carry through to after sales. On my boots, the lace 'eyes' rub against the laces, such that I get through a pair of laces every couple of thousand miles (they fray and wear through). When I called to find out if they could sort them out, they said that I should get a bit of sand paper and fix them myself. Not very impressive. If you can, try to replace the laces with leather ones as they'll last longer.

Also, note that until last year, there was a design fault in that the on the left foot the gear change protection pad on the toe was in the wrong place, meaning that the laces could not be used in the bottom set of 'eyes'.

Otherwise, they've served me well riding from the UK to Oz. Very waterproof!

Boots

I got myself some hitec magnums size 49 from the bigmans shop in Redruth
they were on special offer at £49.99 so I bought 2 pairs they are without doubt the most comfortable boots i have ever had they are water proof (Sympatec or something like) and have worn them every day for the last two years and still on my first pair! :)

I just wish Altberg would read this stuff and design a bot that's as well made and comfy as their others but with more protection......I'd love a pair but not until they do one with proper protection designed specifically for the sort of impact and torsional forces you get in a bike accident.

Off road biking Altbergs? they'd sell very VERY well I reckon...but until then, no way.

:(

why not send them a link to the thread then:nenau it might be worth a try

I've spoken to the owner of Altberg a couple of times when I've been down there and he is very pro bike (he actually owned at the time an older BM twin).
Spends his time between the Richmond factory and a one in Italy where they make the walking boots.
Might be worthwhile passing this on and see what the reaction is.

been very happy with mine.... think they are called roadmasters

i think bike bobby's wear them, which is why i know one day they'll get me off a speeding fine ;-)

Not to take anything away from what you're saying 'cos i don't know enough.
What has concerned me recently, was a mate who had an off (off road). He was wearing solid plastic type alpine stars MX boots. Powerful protection. Problem was he snapped both bones in his leg about half way down inside his boot. I have been wondering if the inflexibility of the boot caused that type of break:confused: He was thrown off, spun in the air and came down heavy on his leg. I wonder if a flexible boot may have allowed his leg to flex a bit and so not snap:confused:

any views?

They're the ones that remain in my locker while I wear out the Daytona's ;)

Just can't wear them due to the stiffness... the left book kills my ankle

got to be said any get off sufficiently hard enough to break leg bones is going to break somthing, might have been a different break but probably still broken.

Another thumbs up for Altberg here.

I've had a pair of Clubman Classics for nigh on 10 years & a pair of Clubman Roadster Microlites for about 5. Wouldn't part with either. Both boots have been back to Altberg for a refurbisment and in both cases spending that £50 meant I got back a virtually new pair of boots (the only thing that they don't replace seems to be the leather upper) that fitted perfectly.

I find them warm in Winter but not roasting in summer. They are utterly waterproof.

Heartily recommended.

There is also a boot caled PRO boot that the army issue I still have mine and they are great. Silvermans in london sell then. The Yanks do a version too called Danner ( Or something like that) Great if you have huge feet.

From a road-use only perspective I wouldn't want to rely on Altbergs.

Last year I popped into the Richmond unit for a pair of Clubman Roadsters made-to-measures, with the nagging doubt about the lack of any protection. But I still went ahead with the order and its 3mth wait.

3mths later the boots turn up; and before I even got my foot all the way down, they were far too narrow so went back in the box and were returned to Altberg for a refund. Though my misfortune was someone's else bonus; a customer in the shop couldn't find a boot narrow enough for him, mine fitted him perfectly!

As I'd crashed recently at walking pace with my left foot/ankle being used as a free rocker cover protector; I only ended up with heavy bruising on the foot/ankle. I'm not convinced an Altberg with no ankle protection would have be of much use.

Currently I'm using TCX's Infinity boot and BMW's Air Flow (for the warm) which has a ski-boot style anti-ankle-twisty-thingy.

I still don't get all the fuss about Altbergs.
