Alternator belt replacement

Had to turn back home from my Friday fish n chip dash to the coast Whirring noise from front of engine and red triangle/battery logo displayed. It has made the noise before but in the past the noise stops after a few hundred yards. I'm hoping it's just the belt and not an alternator problem. Will take a look tomorrow. At least the bike got me back home.

Is belt replacement a DIY job or should I leave it to my local independent? Anyone know the costs? Bike is an 06 and has done 43K miles. I have since found out that the belt should have been replaced at 36K

Belts are less than that (about £15) from Motorworks or Sherlocks. Be aware there are two different lengths of belt as well. What year is your bike?

I paid about £17 from BMW, easy job to do yor self. Plenty of instuctions here or on youtube.

I'll get one from the stealer then. £8 of the £25 was postage so about the same price for the belt itself. Make sure I get the right one for an 06 model then as well

Well before I went to the stealer for a belt I whipped the cover off and to my horror the housing was full of all sort of sh1t, mostly flaked off engine paint. Gave everything a good brush up, started her up and all was OK. No whining noise and charging. Cover now refitted and will test ride tomorrow to conform the fix when the sun is due to be out and the battery will be charged.

Powder coating the front cover inside and out will pretty much stop it corroding. Its not an oil seal joint so coat everything including the gasket face coated. Then corrosion cant creep under. RTV silicone will seal the joint.

If you want the cover outside in engine colour, flat the powder coat and paint over.

BMW have also reduced the mileage between replacements down to every 24K miles - well they have for my '08 GSA so I assume that would include other years as well.
