Got a 97 1100GS. I've been told that my alternator is kaput and need a new one. Rather than buy a new one where is the best placed to source a secondhand one. Any thoughts would be welcome.
regards

Hi

Try your local Auto Electricians - see if they can recondition it for you. I have had the car and the van done with no problems. Unfortunately I can't find the receipts but between £50 and £100 rings a bell.

Good luck

Whats wrong with the alternator? Often its the brushes, diode pack or regulator. The windings can fail but it is comparatively rare. You can get replacement parts at reasonable cost and rebuild you own. bearings are also available. Worth a dig into and try the repair route if you have a little time. Of course if you or someone you know can use a meter then it gets much easier.

I'm going completely by what a mechanic has said, electrickery is a black art as far as I'm concerned. :nenau
I think the logic is that the battery is not charging when engine is running.
Thanks for the input, I think I may ask for a second opinion before parting with cash.

hmmm that last comment is open to a lot of interpretation!!!

it could be a broken lead it could be the brushes it could be a fuse

has anyone actually checked it rather than make a sweeping statement?

its been said but all the components of the alternator can be replaced its wether someone is botherd to find out what ..:thumb
