I just got my Zumo today. I upgraded the firmware to 4.0 as part of the installation on the PC. The Elevation is available on the Compass screen. Is this different to what you are looking for? I dont know if thiis has just been added or not.

....on a high now!

Scottpa....

....thanks for the info......Mrs. Spotless, (the resident technocrat...I'm the resident luditocrat!)....has just upgraded us from 2.5 to 4.0....

.....lot's of stuff has changed and the new compass screen is much better and yes, now I know how high I am (man!)......many thanks.

Here's an off the wall question....if Zumo's are Bluetooth enabled....why can't Garmin just automatically keep all their BT enabled kit updated automatically whenever your Zumo gets within range of your home PC?.....assuming of course your home PC is BT enabled as well....

Technically it could be done. However the data transfer rate for Bluetooth is a tenth that of USB so the update would take ages. I guess that you could at least check the firmware version. However as BT is not built in to most PC's yet (desktops at least) Garmin probably won't bother until BT is more broadly adopted by the PC manufacturers.

I think the existing system is pretty good though, IF you plug the unit in to the PC regularly. I got into the habit of running the updater whenever I connect the unit to use it with Mapsource. The updater checks the unit against the Garmin website and tells you if there is a new version.

Added to which Bluetooth isn't a particularly stable connection, easily disturbed by distance or obstruction, if this was broken whilst updating it would cause all sorts of confusion that Garmin tech support wouldn't want to deal with. Best to stick to wired, it's far safer.
