I'm after an aluminium top box for my GS 1150 (NOT Adventurer).

I've seen the BMW offering for the GSA, which I understand can be fitted to the GS, and then I found the Gobi range from Hepco & Becker (the only supplier of which I can find is motobins @ £258).

As the H&B top box is cheaper - it is my prefered choice.

Does anyone have experience of either of these items on the GS ?
Are there any other alternatives ?

thanks

Aaron, try Civil for a Caja Sahel topbox. Do a search for Caja Sahel to see pictures then you could PM him for price etc.

Is there such a thing as a generic mounting for aluminium top boxes?

If you could mount any aluminium box rather than the super-expensive custom made bike boxes then the choice would be huge.

For example - these ones from Machine Mart cost between £41 and £70.

These boxes came up in a thread a while back but I don't think anything conclusive happened. Having seen them in the flesh I'd quite like to give one a go. The small one at 485x317x410mm would make an ideal topbox. For that price I'd be quite happy to drill it to put fastenings on the bottom.

not the cheapest way..

Having fitted a zega top-box, I'd be pretty confident that the mount from it (available seperately) could be used on any box. About £60 from memory - does have a key-lock though. I've taken mine off now though, never really got on with it, its just too damn ugly - took ages to work out how to fit it without english instructions and you have to drill the box itself anyway.

Been thinking of selling it.

I've just had the Hepco & Becker Expedition top box from Motobins, £238 for the box and bracket. Civil's are cheaper cases but the mounting is the same as Mikes suggestion for the machine mart cases. I'd reccomend the Hepco stuff.

Just got mine from Caja Sahel £150 and it's the dogs bollox !! I highly recommend Philips work and the bonus is "You can have it whatever size or shape you like"

Here's a pic of mine

Very nice.

Any chance of you showing the mounting hardware on the bike, but without the topbox? I'm still keen on trying out a cheapo box so buying Civil's mounting kit might be a nice interim solution. If the cheapo box turn out to be crap then at least I can buy one of his boxes as I'll have the right mounting system.

I've not fitted it yet, but here is the pic of Cajasahels website... It's a single piece of steel with 4 bolts.

I like the look of those from Machine Mart. If they are water tight then I am going to mount one on the Reyno rear rack that was on my bike when I purchased it. Just a matter of driling some holes in the box to line up with the various ones on the rack.
I plan to contact Machine Mart today to ask a few questions. Will let you know what they say.

Just to update.....

I went to machine mart in Twickenham to view the ali boxes. The smallest box in the picture is quite big. You could easily get two full size lids in there. They are well made but I personally thought it would look like a pizza delivery box on the back so I won't be persueing this as an alternative topbox.

Hi Aaron
Ive a bmw alu. box fitted to my 1150 it only needs a small bite off 25 x6 flat plate to hold the bottom off the plate from falling foward but the rest fits straight on no holes to drill in the main plate or bracket.
Thanks Den. :thumb
