Anyone in the south bought one............any opinions of the device, or the process? I was told we have to buy the 'international' version from Amazon.com rather than the UK version from amazon.co.uk............is that the case?

Not bought one yet. But the UK site refuses to ship to Ireland. Could be something to do with the directive of recycling charges for electronics. When this was introduced (Ireland was the first country to implement this directive) Amazon refused to ship anything electronic to Ireland. Seems like they fixed the software on the US site to handle this charge. Amazon usually rolls out new software on the US site first.
So either order from US and wait 2 weeks for delivery, or wait 6 months for the UK site to allow you to order it Ireland.
