An acceptable list of spares to take with you?

You only need puncture repair kit, Spare key, torx keys and about 3 spanners. Im not sure the TC even has anything that needs a screw driver but hell take one anyway, if you have a 550 sat nav then the small allen key to take out the battery, and I would never go anywhere without metal putty. The odd spade connector and small jubilee clip. Been far and wide and thats all I have ever needed.

for western europe, i take a fuel pump controller, and that's because i have a couple of s/h ones lying around, otherwise i wouldn't bother. i used one on someone else's bike a few years back in switzerland. new ones seem pretty good now, so it's not really necessary, more habit.

but that's it, apart from a puncture kit & air capsule things. carry all the crap mentioned on this thread? you must be fucking joking

Don't bother with a puncture repair kit if the tyre is of steel belt construction. From the 08 model GS onwards has a different design fuel tank to keep the FPC connections dryish.

We travel 2 up on the bike with camping equipment and there is not a lot of space for spares. Take money, lots of it.

On one adventure trip to Morocco that I took, one of the guys on a F650GS had an VERY comprehensive Touratech toolkit. There was not one item in the kit that was any use at all when I had to fix his puncture. :blast

I notice that on Oisin Hughes's Siberian adventure trip video's he only took a puncture repair kit and a compressor, he didn't even have the special tool needed to remove the front wheel. :blast

All you need is a spare key, puncture repair kit (any know how to use it), compressor, metal putty (for emergency repairs) and a few basic tools. Oh, and a credit card if near civilisation, plus replacement bulbs 'cos you WILL be relieved of beer tokens if you ride with a busted lamp in Europe.

All you experts who say "Just take a credit card" would be up shit creek without a paddle if you also don't think you need to carry tubes when using tubeless tyres etc etc etc.

I've lost count how many tubes, brake levers, chain links, fork seals, wheel bearings etc. I've given to those when out riding .... because they know better, but if you're just going to Tesco's or the Alps that's a different matter

True inner tubes dont need much space. but sounds like two spare wheels complete with tyres would be better.

You need only one part depending on where you are going.

A credit card and a phone if near by.. Say Europe or North America.

Or, another bike if further afield. Like any old Yamaha or Honda on off of sorts...

What has come in useful in the last 80,000 plus miles of European motorcycling?

1. Recovery insurance, twice.

2. One fuel pump controller (problem now fixed)

3. An indicator bulb (bought in a Citroen garage, whilst stopped for fuel)

4. A table fork (to mend a snapped off wing mirror)

5. Gaffer tape and two cable ties (to affix mirror to stem and fork, see 4)

6. Puncture repair kit (twice)

7. Screwdriver (to remove lens, to replace indicator bulb, see 3)

8. Torx (to remove body panels and fuel pump controller, see 2)

I think that's it.
